What does the sine of an angle actually mean

👉 Learn all about the trigonometry of right triangles. A right triangle is a triangle that has 90 degrees as one of its angles. The trigonometric identities of right triangles give us the relationship between the angles of a right triangle and the side lengths of the right triangle. These trigonometric identities, commonly called SOHCAHTOA, are: sin x = opposite / hypothenuse; cos x = adjacent / hypothenuse and tan x = opposite / adjacent. Also, the Pythagoras' theorem gives us the relationship between the side lengths of a right triangle. Knowledge of these properties enables us to solve problems involving right triangles.

Thank you for this. It drives me mad that my math class rushed through the unit plugging things into formulas without ever giving a single consideration as to what or why any of it is being done, presumably because that was deemed a waste of time. In my eyes, this completely defeats the purpose of school, especially in the math class: being able to recite facts and formulas is completely empty without an understanding behind what it represents and how and where it can be applied. This is probably why I generally prefer science tbh.

Excellent approach! I came across this video because I am about to make a similar one, but even simpler, to give students a better ‘feel’ for the concept. Too many explanations jump straight into calculations, losing many students from the start.

I looked up trigonometry problems to see if I could understand better as an adult than when I was in high school and I did with this teacher in cos, tan, ....then ask now that I memorized how to do it, theoretically what does it mean. I googled it and this same teacher popped up and broke down exactly what the theory behind the formula means. Great work, wish my teacher in school had this mentality

I feel at peace now, I always wondered what y=sin(X) was doing. It's just constructing right angled triangles (within the limits 0<X<90degrees)

I wonder how the rest of sin of X works to get the rest of the values between -1 and 1

I was just on my couch thinking about all the concepts I've "learned" decades ago on school, that I couldn't really understand in a deeper way. Sine was one that came to mind. I could even remember the number for 30, 45 and 60°, but never really stoped to think about what that actually means. Now I see this video as a 33 years old adult and my mind is blown in seconds. I don't know if I didn't have such a good math teacher or if I was just like these kids, only worried about test questions.
