So many Golf R haters. You guys seem to not understand what type of people choose this car. The golf R is a $33k optioned GTI with more power and AWD for an extra $4k. The level of fit and finish, refinement and ride quality are above competition. All the boy racers pick up STi's but then complain about the poor ride quality as a daily driver. The Golf R is a car that you will enjoy to be in and enjoy to drive wherever, whenever. Why don't you drive both cars before you guys complain... I have.

At 1:26 you say, "And it sounds so much better than you expect..." then you swell the music louder over the sound of the engine. Why??? Wasn't the whole point of that set up to then cut to the engine noise? So why swell the music at that exact point? Makes no sense.

1:22 "It sounds so much better than you'd expect" *turns up background music while revving the engine* ....

i just got a 2010 GTI as my first car after months of research and i absolutely love it, even tho a few of my friends think its ugly. I'm just like u obviously know nothing about cars and the genius engineering that went into this car and above all the quality of it. its built to last and every minute detail down to the real stitching is what makes this car so special

"It sounds so much better than you'd expect." So lets turn up the volume of the crappy music so you can't hear it.

Both great cars - a real dilemma. The GTI especially with performance pack is a great deal - the handling even in slippery conditions is also good. This R though, unlike past R's has more daylight in terms of power between itself and the GTI and the though FWD mode most of the time, the AWD especially with winter tires will come in handy for folks in some States. Looking forward to next year, when they compare the manual Golf R to the Focus RS, should be good.

Definitely loving the GTI. Would like to get one some day.

I'd take the GTI, Golf R, or the S3. But if money wasn't an issue I'd pick the Golf R.
BTW when comparing the price, that $40k Golf R comes loaded. The $43k S3 is base... Optioned the way I would want the S3, there is over a $10k difference and the practical hatchback goes out the window...

I have to laugh at the quality comments. The 2 biggest quality-problem manufacturers are Ford and Subaru. You couldn't give me something they manufactured for even half the cost... Been driving VW's for 4 decades and none needed more than regularly scheduled services...

I have never regretted buying my 2015 GTI and even with the release of the Golf R, I still love my GTI. The R looks like a beautiful car, but like you guys said, and I would agree, I would much rather have an Audi if I'm going to spend 40k plus on a car.

GTI would be good enough and expensive enough for me.

Golf R stick is coming soon, but right now is only DSG. GTI comes with both. Except I can't see myself paying 40k for a Golf.

Manufacturers have sent me & wife to 4 driving schools. (Audi #1; Jaguar #2!) Have an Aston & Mercedes roadster. Love the Aston but ordering a GTI R Manual for my daily driver. Put the Audi engine, the quattro system & suspension selection together in a competitive vehicle & what do you get? Approx. $86-120M! This for $42M brand new. Agree on the sedate looks - but just take it to the car wrap people!
(....and ground effects lighting???) Having "R" graphic tape made & adhering to quarter panels.

210hp in the mk7 gti!? In what country? The mk6 had 211hp.
The mk7 is available with either 220hp or 230hp in the "performance" version. I have the later one. Thinking about changing to a 2016 R station but don't want the fuelbills to skyrocket so i haven't made my mind up yet.
