Cartier Concours d’Elegance 2017.
2017 Cartier Travel With Style Concours d’Elegance
When it comes to vintage and classic cars, India has always been like a hidden jewel box – a treasure trove of unique automobiles that reflect our country’s unparalleled history. India’s automotive narrative, its remarkable heritage, its passionate collectors and talented restorers are all finally getting their place in the sun, thanks to the Cartier Travel With Style Concours d’Elegance.
The Concours is held every two years, and the recent one held this month in Hyderabad – with the magnificent Taj Falaknuma Palace hosting it – was the fifth iteration. The Concours is essentially a beauty contest for automobiles, segmented into different categories for judging. And the cars that are competing are never repeated. So: Five Concours held so far and on an average 50-60 cars have participated in each. And there are many more events to be held every two years. Imagine the number of such cars in our country. Boggles the mind, doesn’t it?
The Cartier Travel With Style Concours d’Elegance has garnered international acclaim and is today one of the most prestigious events of its kind on this planet. Some of the biggest names in the world of automobiles, motorsport, design and style are judges. Curated by Manvendra Singh Barwani, who’s an automotive restorer, historian and a concours judge himself, the cars are undoubtedly the stars of the show.
If you notice, the eight categories for cars and three for two-wheelers are fairly representative of the 100-plus years of our automotive history. The categories are: Pre-War Classics (American/European), Pre-War Classics (Rolls-Royce), Post-War Classics (American/European), Américain Aérodynamique, Indian Heritage Class, Roadster Class, Preservation Class and Exhibition Class. For Motorcycles: Veteran-Vintage, Pre-War and Post-War.
