I always get anxious when I’m saving my stuff on the external drive (thinking it might get damage or something) nice video, NAS looks awesome!

Been using very similar 2 bay Asustor NAS for years. The only difference I see is mine don’t support the nvme ssds. Still going strong and it’s operating 24/7. With port forwarding, I can access it anywhere anytime. NAS is really handy

Big fan of Synology here. Have two big NAS units, 12-bays and 16-bays, both with SSD cache. A good NAS is life-changing. Keep in mind that RAID is not backup and that 2nd drives are more likely to fail while rebuilding/remirroring a replaced first drive.

This was a vet nice introductory video for what a NAS is.

I am pretty good with technology (as a user) but I do not know why I wasn’t interested in NAS before.

This video sparked my interest 🙂

(From 6:45 onwards either there is a problem with the mixing of the background music or the track sounds like a stray cat bumping a metal trash can lid and scratching its claws on a chalkboard… something is off with the sound. The video overall is still nice)

Yes, got my iPad Pro 2021 finally (11" - 128 GB) - like it (yes yes, 128 GB, but it's only and solely for media consumption...). Could you make a video on how you maintain the screens of your devices Patrick? My other 3 iPads have a heavy duty Survivor case with screen protector, this one doesn't (Targus). Funny enough, iPad Pro 2021 + Targus weighs 70 g more than iPad Air 2 + Survivor...

Storage nerd here.

While you are correct that two drives failing simultaneously is less likely than one drive failing, it is still the case that one of two drives failing is more likely than one of one drives failing. Have you tested trying to access the data off the second drive?

The problem with one drive failing (even though you have RAID 1 and two drives with identical data) is that you probably went to a website and ordered two of the same model of drive, adding quantity “2” to your cart and likely getting two drives manufactured at nearly the same time. Drives from the same manufacturing batch have a tendency to fail around the same time. So, if you are required to rebuild the RAID to access the data saved on the non-failed drive, you’ll potentially have to do a total drive write to a new drive, copying from the old one, to access the data again. This gives ample time for the second drive to fail (it’s more likely than you’d think) and for your data to be lost.

Backups are expensive and suck to do, but there’s no replacement for them :(

Can you access the NAS from your iPad? I'll have to look into this tech. I have two big boxes full of hard drives from the last 20 years of all the projects I've worked on...

Google Drive Unlimited is a better solution if you have decent internet

2 bay only allow raid 1, it doesn't help with your massive storage of videos
