I'm confident that Shep will return. Bioware/EA are just stalling until the new Dragon Age is released. Understandably they want all the focus and enthusiasm on that. After Dragon Age has rocked the charts, they will drop the Shep-alive bomb and watch the internet explode.

To steal Dragon Age's thunder would be bad marketing.

Look i want you to hear me out. I saw something really interesting about Shepard and the possibility he/she being alive in the next game. We all know about the destroy ending and Shepard takes a breath at the end and all this, soo in the Legendary edition they literaly change the whole cutscene and now is snowing like hell around him/her and as we know Liara is searching for someone in the snow, she even found the N7 thingy. Dig into this, can be something.

I think he is coming back I could be wrong of course but it looks like they've been hinting at the fact with Mass Effect legendary edition with the added cutscene at the destroy ending that wasn't in the original Mass Effect 3
