Gun. Say it! SAY THE FUCKING WORD! I lived through high school in the early 1990s with access to many guns and ammo making tools and supplies. High school sucked. I never thought of shooting up the place. I went to college and was a loser. Columbine happened while I was there (in college, not Columbine). Never dreamed about shooting up the place, even after bullying, disability, no accomodations, failing, dropping out. Went to another school, did well, helped others. This song came out after all that. Hearing the word "gun" would not have made me shoot up a school, college, mall, movie theater, supermarket, night club, library, shopping plaza, fast food restaurant, strip club, casino, liquor store, church, mosque, synagogue, temple, used car dealership, or interstate highway. Hearing the word "gun" one time in a song isn't going to suddenly make anyone suddenly into a mass shooter that wasn't already going to do it anyways. The problem isn't the word, "gun". The problem is a failure of our society and culture that emphasizes hollow materialism and hyper-individualism, leaving people isolated, suffering indescribable despair, with no social support or safety net to provide an outlet, redirection, and healing, through developing meaningful engagement, connection, and relationships, as well as opportunity and hope. You can't fix what's broken by censoring words out of fear of lost revenue driven by fear of some high strung and delusional overly sanctimonious members of the community who fear words, ideas, feelings, community, and conversation.
