The First Doctor regenerates in his first confrontation with the Cybermen! Can an animation really do justice to this classic lost episode?

"Keep warm..." is such a beautiful last phrase for Hartnell's Doctor to utter to his companions. It felt like his arc had finally completed, from brash, grumpy and selfish to, as you so nicely put, a loving grandfather figure who saves the day. "Keep warm..." is a concern for Ben and Polly, not his own wellbeing, and a beautifully gentle final note. Hartnell was wonderful.

I was 8 years old when the Doctor regenerated and I can still remember running into the kitchen where my mother was cooking. In awe and out right amazement saying to her “Doctor Who’s face has just changed into someone else!” It was certainly epic and the fact I remember it 58 years later shows the power of the Doctor’s first regeneration.

The Tenth Planet being just a standalone story about the Cybermen while so many modern regenerations being giant epic battles couldn't be truer, but this is why I like the 12th Doctor. He went out the exact same way as William Hartnell, a standalone story about bunch of Cybermen that ends with sacrificing himself to save couple of people.

"Giggling gnome" is the best description of the First Doctor I've yet heard 😂

I remember watching this about ten or so years ago and my then-six year old daughter was in the room. As soon as the Cybermen opened their mouths, she screamed and ran out of the room shouting “I DON’T LIKE IT! I DON’T LIKE IT!”

Hartnell was already a well known & very respected movie actor that brought gravitas & quality to the role that subsequent actors never really could
We all too often forget this, his film roles are fairly legendary
He was part of that generation of actors that were forcibly new to TV

So glad they finally used those telesnaps at last !!
Yes those original cybermen will always be the utter creepiest just because we do get a lingering sense of distorted flesh still under the plastic
Capaldi's meeting with them was memorable too

Turns out Ice Warriors came out before this, sorry folks!!

I’ve got Moonbase coming next, THEN Ice Warriors.

Unfortunately for the series to work, I have to do this order. It makes more sense narratively, when talking about different art styles. Sorry I messed up!!

The fact that this story has yet to come to streaming outside the UK is why I decided to buy all of Classic Who physically in the first place. I just couldn’t imagine not being able to see the end of the First Doctor’s journey for myself, and now I own all of Who on DVD.

I loved the 10th planet animation because it felt like the telesnaps where brought back to life and it felt like it was the original episode

It was a monumental moment. I watched episode 4, and the regeneration, at my grandparents' place, just after my grandfather died, but the family gave us permission to watch Doctor WHO, although the TV was generally quiet that weekend. I give my parents credit for having seen something in the paper about Hartnell's departure, but keeping it quiet from us, to avoid spoiling the surprise. The playground was in absolute meltdown on the following Monday, with much breathless discussion.

Planet 55 worked wonders with recreating the 8mm footage of the regeneration. They truly nailed it with what they were given.

The concept that a main character could "regenerate" and be replaced by a new actor was revolutionary at the time. And let's give Patrick Troughton the credit he deserves. If he wasn't able to pull it off and win over the fans as a totally different Doctor, there's no way the show would have lasted.

This was one of the first classic stories I watched and it immediately became one of my favourites.

The creepiness of the Cybermen (the fact that in some shots you can see their eyes(, the setting in Antarctica, Hartnell's amazing performance!

Thank God Blue Peter had that regeneration clip or there would be no reference to it whatsoever.Yes it was a fantastic animation Josh.

This and The Moonbase animations are my favourite missing episode recreations as they feel like the tele-snaps have been rotoscoped and have come to life, I also respect that they maintained the black and white visuals and the overall frame being 4:3 instead of being in color and widescreen which would’ve felt out of place and jarring when paired with the previous 3 episodes, while I obviously hope the actual live action episode is found someday at least we have a film print of the regeneration scene which is arguably the most important scene in the entire episode

Always loved the style of animation for the Tenth Planet, very true to the original.
Like An Unearthly Child episode 4 is very important being the first regeneration something so unique and simple. Love it.

Great video, Josh!

The late Shirley Coward was the Vision Mixer on The Tenth Planet. She was the person responsible for the transmography of Hartnell's features to Troughton's. It is quite a moment. Arguably the most important in the entire series.

The animated version does it reasonable justice.

I LOVE YOUR HARTNELL APPREACIATION! He's also my (second) favorite.
Only being SLIGHTLY below Capaldi.
