I'm a design and construction expert, we often do repairs the same way you do. In addition, when the solution begins to overflow, you should plug that hole so that the solution can fill the empty holes inside.

great quick fix to save tile from being cracked. i see negative comments, but when you drop something on one of those hollow spots, the tile cracks like glass. so this technique is a great fast way to save integrity till you decide to get down and dirty.

I confirm that this method works. Though I only drilled through the grout until the drill bit touches the Not all the way through to the earths core.

Bravo, I thought you did this at least fifty times and told the tile dealers, they said, we need to replace it completely. And even now I have this problem, but unfortunately there is no such a skilled person. I'm still looking for the tile from 3 years ago.

Smart to fix it before the tile breaks. Save your next empty caulk tube for this fix. Wonder if the tiler just used a few dabbed pillars of mortar to set the tiles, rather than trowelled channels in it for full coverage. I've read that some do that for faster leveling and no oozing out the sides. Also best to back-butter tiles, esp larger ones.

As a similar fix-it, to repair a delaminated wall (rain) in a camping trailer (flush aluminum outside vacuum bonded to luan plywood, foam, interior luan), I drilled from the inside to the outer aluminum (easily felt, so didn't drill thru). Many small holes for a Great Stuff poly foam straw. I filled until the foam oozed out other holes, then plugged them with a wet Q-tip (cures the poly). That makes the foam pack in and cure dense. Before that, I secured the outer wall w/ plywood and studs to a fence so it wouldn't bow out under the foam.

Very interesting. I have used a somewhat similar technique dealing with settlement cracks in interior walls, only using building PVA adhesive and a syringe to inject it into holes drilled along the crack.
