It’s the news we’ve all been waiting for! After over two years, Japan is finally opening its borders to welcome tourists again. In 2019, Japan was one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, but with the onset of the 2020 pandemic, borders were shut. Now, the byFood team is thrilled to welcome tourists to Japan again!

ABOUT BYFOOD:

ByFood is Japan’s one-stop platform for foodie travelers. Here, visitors can book food experiences (food tours, cooking classes, dining experiences, tastings), place restaurant reservations without Japanese, and learn about Japanese food culture and places to eat in different regions of Japan.

ByFood strives to make Japanese food culture accessible to anyone, removing the language barrier and accommodating dietary needs. And if your perfect food experience isn’t available on our platform, the VIP Gourmet Concierge will create one that is custom-made for you.

Best of all, for every experience that’s booked on byFood, 10 school meals will be donated to children in need through the Food for Happiness program.

Thank you, Shizuka and Japan By Food. I've been to Japan seven times, and I'm rarin' to bring my wife for visit eight! First six trips, for me, were work or military (loved 'em all!!!), starting with a Navy training mission in 1973 (trained with the amazing Maritime Self-Defense Force!). Finally, was able to bring my wife for a vacation in October 2019. She loves Japan, too.

Just came back from a 2-week trip and had a blast! Couple of things I wanted to note:

- If you plan on visiting Kyoto from Tokyo using the bullet train, then purchasing a JR pass is worth it. A JR pass will cover your Narita Airport express from Narita to Tokyo city, and also the Hikari shinkansen line between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka (the Hikari is the only shinkansen line covered by the JR pass by the way). If you don't, then I wouldn't buy a JR pass.
- Get a SUICA card. These you can buy in the train stations, and it's easy to top off as well. The cards can be used on the train systems as well as many stores and restaurants. Very convenient.
- UBER works in several Japanese cities. I used it multiple times in Tokyo and it was very convenient. You can use your existing UBER account from home and the current credit card on file as well.
- Speaking of, make sure you have consistent internet access, and don't rely on using free wi-fi. I paid for the international access on my Verizon account to have uninterrupted coverage in Japan without having to use a SIM. Costly, but absolutely worth it and not have to worry about a SIM card. Another option is to rent a pocket wi-fi device. Having internet access has helped me so many times with directions. Whenever I was lost, I'd simply type in the desired location on my Google maps and the GPS accurately pointed me in the right walking direction. Google also helped me to sort out which train/subway lines to use and in what direction. My friend who did not prepare had a miserable time getting lost and struggling to find a wi-fi signal..
- If you plan on visiting any of the amusement parks like Disneyland, then you need to buy them online ahead of time as they get sold out quick (the new Super Mario Land at Universal Studios Osaka required a separate ticket which I did not realize until too late). For some reason I could not use the Tokyo Disney website to purchase tickets and instead purchased through Klook. Also, these places get seriously packed all days of the week. I could only manage a few rides at Tokyo Disneysea and Universal Studios as the wait times were 2 hours plus for the popular rides. I don't know if they have a fast pass type system like they do in the U.S.
- I underestimated how much I would walk. You will walk miles everyday so get comfortable walking shoes and don't over do it like I did.

Please feature things you can do in or around Narita airport. I'm looking for a flight at the end of November and most of them have 10-hour layover in Tokyo. Thank you and can't wait to visit again.
