With the highlights setting you can recover burned pixels while the shadow slider helps you to bring details on dark areas. Now when you do it, you loose contrast usually. So with the white and blacks slider you can reset the brightest and darker point so that the contrast is back. And with the option/alt key hold you can see how much those sliders are affecting your picture. Hope that answer your question.

Bonjour Serge. Merci pour ce tutos encore une fois plein de richesse. Je comprends les gens qui ont des difficultés avec l'anglais, en parallèle je trouve ton anglais tout à fait accessible, de plus pour des tutos sur un logiciel, où on voit clairement ce qui se passe sur l'écran. Un tuto excellent donc qui rappelle bien les avancées de LR5. À quand des tutos sur autre chose que la retouche, par exemple sur "faire des livres" ou faire des slide shows ?

Serge, I've always been curious why you hold the option/alt key to reveal the whites and blacks. I know what you are doing there. I'm just curious what that is accomplishing. Does that make sense? It's the next step after you bring down the highlights and lower the shadows.
