What is information?

Information is on our phones and in our DNA sequence, but what is it exactly? Is it something subjective or a real quantity?

This is not information, it's data. Information in physics is fundamental and it makes the Universe work. The quantum field works as per information and the reality is called data. This video doesn't even address the issue here. The question still has no answer as why the quantum field acts exactly this way. We don't know where fundamental information comes from, how it exists, why it's shaped in our reality... and so forth. Happy brain storm!

This avoids the question completely. Information is only something that is meaningful to its reciever. A long poem in Swahili would only be information to a person who can understand that language. An orange flower sends information to bees that us humans cannot understand or even see. It's all about the sender and reciever.

I think the thing we call information is equivalent to work, the term used in thermodynamics to describe 'useful' energy.

When you want to describe the positions of molecules in a glass of water you need a certain amount of information. This information can be compared quite good because all molecules are quite localized.
Add energy to it and the water vaporizes and finally it fills the whole room. Now it costs a lot of information to keep track of the positions of all molecules which are not localized anymore and hence is not compressible anymore. But this information is not 'useful'.
The useful information is somewhere in between the two states, which is where you get the work-energy from.

Way more energy went into making this video than information coming out of it.

This doesn't get to addressing the real question, surely. There's no such thin as information which is not instantiated in a physical system. So does it make sense to think of information as anything other than a useful abstraction?

Access to information is important. But even more important is the gap between those who have access to high technology and those who don't.

Information, about computing platforms ..A computing platform or digital platform[1] is the environment in which a piece of software is executed. It may be the hardware or the operating system (OS), even a web browser and associated application programming interfaces, or other underlying software, as long as the program code is executed with it. Computing platforms have different abstraction levels, including a computer architecture, an OS, or runtime libraries.[2] A computing platform is the stage on which computer programs can run.

A platform can be seen both as a constraint on the software development process, in that different platforms provide different functionality and restrictions; and as an assistant to the development process, in that they provide low-level functionality ready-made. For example, an OS may be a platform that abstracts the underlying differences in hardware and provides a generic command for saving files or accessing the network.

That is a given in social sciences for the past 70 years or more, and in arts for much longer than that... information is one abstraction provided by the material configuration of something in relation to something else.. In social sciences and history, configuration equals context. In psychology, configuration equals gestalt or the neural pathways' patterns.
On the case of the thought experiment, information would be the configuration of the particles inside each chamber in relation to the door or the demon..

I don't belong to science field but I loved science in my school time and also love it now. Though I don't understand many of your videos, I cannot stop myself from watching them! (y) I just love it :)

To say that electrons are real is... a delicate thing to say given the findings of quantum physics.

*Information Theory establishes that all info originates from a mind. So according to Info Theory, where does DNA coded Info originate from?*

So basically information is opposite of enthropy, right?

I find this explanation more confusing than useful.
I's also not the way physicists tend to think of information..
What physicist usually think of as information is "the number of bits needed to describe the
state of something", which is proportional to the log of the number of
states it can possibly be in. For instance a coin has 1 bit of info
because it can be in 2 states. This can be extended to talk about the
information of a particular state, but basically the random one would
turn out to have more information, but this idea isn't applied much in
physics.

Anyway, information is physical in so far
as things in nature can be in more than one state, so they can hold
information, by definition..

The 2nd law is also not quite right in the video, as it should be formulated in terms of entropy, but ok.

Landauer's
principle (the whole thing with the demon needing energy) is also
interesting. As some people have recently pointed out, the argument it's
usually used in is circular. Maxwell came up with his demon as a flaw
in the of the 2nd law: if such a demon was possible it would violate the
2nd law. Then Landauer found his principle, and people thought that
because it showed the ideal demon was impossible, the 2nd law was saved.
The problem is that Landauer's principle, in its most general form can
currenlty only be proved by assuming the 2nd law...
The
way to go is looking at the actual statistical physics of systems
derived from fundamental laws, and see if they obey Landauer's
principle. So far, they seem to.

what is "energy" that you add to the box?

Great video, and I realize it is meant as a very short introduction, but I have to comment on the fact that it makes a category error when describing information as order/decrease in entropy that does exist in some parts of the universe, like a living cell (which is what I imagine the writer had in mind). However, someone who doesn't know the concept beforehand might get confused. I think information is just a concept, although decrease in entropy does occur in nature. So it is a fallacy to say that information is as real as a squirrel, at least in my view. Very good video nonetheless, and I think I understand what the point was. It is a good point, but explained a little misleadingly.

light is energy and energy is information. Misinformation is information = evil does not exist and fake news is information... you simply need inference to process it correctly.

Information is the most fundamental intangible abstraction of the tangible universe we inhabit - an intangible representation of (literally) EVERYTHING. Science is only able to answer many questions and describe the universe as a whole by using information in this manner - using an information-centric model.

So can information be destroyed? Where do last summer's pictures go when our hard drive crashes? What happens to our memories when we die?
