Many familiar terms in football, such as Flat-track bully, Playing on the front foot, and Corridor of uncertainty, have their origins in the sport of cricket. The fact that football teams consist of 11 players on each side is believed to have been influenced by cricket's structure..

Getting a Hat Trick in Cricket is tougher than getting one in Football

Ah that's earlier than the story I had heard about Canadian ice hockey fans throwing their hats into the rink when a player got 3 goals.

Why is it called a brace when a player scores two goals ?

A trick is a term used in many card games to refer to a winning play. It could very well come from that.

I always thought it was named after the trick that uses 3 cups or "hats".

Well I think the correct theory is -

The first bowler who consecutively took 3 wickets, after the match he was awarded a hat (by his teammates probably) . So they started saying "Hat-Trick" because you get a hat if you took 3 wickets consecutively.

This took me a long time to write.

No issues with hat-tricks and pokers but when someone mentions the word penta-trick, that really grinds my gears

“Jeremy Clarkson with sideburns invented the hat-trick”. Could have saved a few words.

I don't know why but in german speaking countries it was only used for thre consecutive goals from one player within a half - if a player manages to do that today it's often referred to as a "flawless Hattrick".

I always thought it was related to “3 card Monty” played in parks. Sometimes it’s played with caps (hats), is a gambling scam (trick), and impossible do (win)

That alcohol hat trick appeared in an episode of Cheers back in the day

In cards, a trick is a group of cards played together. That seems like another way in which the word 'trick' would have felt relevant.

Could it be that any incredible feat in the 1800s was colloquially called a hat trick metaphorically from magic and so it was applied to a rare sports feat also

I remember Jimmy Greaves saying, that years ago it was only classed as a hat-trick (in football), if the three goals followed on. Whether it's true or not, I'm not sure.

its a hockey term started in Guelph Ontario you score 3 goals in a game people throw their hats onto the ice

Hat Tricks are way cooler in ice hockey than they are in football, since fans actually throw hats onto the ice when a hat trick is scored in hockey. Thats a tradition I really wish found its way over to football.
