I made a rookie mistake. Buying a vintage Omega from Ebay

A short video about my latest acquisition, a vintage Omega Seamaster. A lovely watch, but perhaps I should have done more research and held off a little. Tell me what you think of this watch. Would you keep it, or are the problems a deal breaker?

I got some advice from someone on Instagram, someone who is more of an expert than me, and they confirmed my suspicions.

The obvious thing that strikes me immediately is that the text has been printed back after they cleaned the dial as you mentioned. That is certain. That being said, it's not that awful, they did a pretty good job i think. The vintage charm is present, the movement is so beautiful and most of all things, this watch looks perfect on you (we have the same size of wrist i know). If you paid a little for this it's totally worth it ! Do not sell it ! keep it ! That definitely suits you. And it's an Omega after all ! Cheers bro, nice video.

My point: genuine ! Enjoy it.
I have vinage swiss with not that mark (swiss or swiss made) and they are 100% genuine.

A lot of these old vintage Omegas are kinda like frankenwatches with miss match parts. But it's still a beautiful watch. I love this piece. It reminds me of my Omega 560 cal. Thanks

Those are slight imperfections and I wouldn't worry about them. The important thing is that the calibre of the movement is genuine and looks to be in perfect condition.

i too follow omega enthusiast here and on IG, its and absolute world of knowledge regarding these vintage Omega, there are so many combinations they did back then with case numbers, dials, colors, styles that its almost impossible to say if that dial belongs to that case number/cal...only a very knowledgeable person would be able to say that, i think...still its a beautiful watch, its a keeper!

I'm also a big fan of vintage Omega's from that period and your watch is lovely. I am a bit of a purist and I don't pull the trigger on a watch until I'm satisfied it's all original. If that means waiting for the right piece or saving up some more then so be it because ultimately the issues of non original parts or poor restoration will effect it's price. I have just bought a 1972 Omega Geneve 565 cal. One owner from new, never been through a dealer, all original including Omega hesalite crystal and movement looks brand new. But I have looked at hundreds of examples and waited for a good one to appear because there is always one out there waiting. It's all about the chase. Regards

Nice piece! Probably a hell lot more than £500 if omega released this today.

It's actually an excellent timepiece! It's beautiful, looks like a £180-£210 maybe little more tbh if you paid within that range I agree perfectly great buy!!

Glad you're enjoying it for what it is, too many watch snobs around who dis anything that isn't as it came out of the factory.

Good deal...get rid of the dial and put in a nice silver one! People stating they got theirs £150/200, last time I checked on Ebay no Seamaster 30 could be purchased for that low!

Typo. “ I also have got a Seamaster from 1961 “ not seldom ! The lack of the Swiss Made is rare but not unheard of .there are also several Seamaster texts styles and yours and mine appear to perhaps be less common again than others. The calibre movement in the 1961 watch is a 600 calibre . I own three Seamasters, a basic no date which is the 600 calibre, a Seamaster deVille date in gold 563, a steel Seamaster de Ville with linen dial 552. Everyone has a different style Seamaster style of writing .

I think that the two really important aspects are: genuine and good condition calibre and low cost. If you want to restore dial and bezel you can do it later and imagine that you have had the opportunity of buying the watch in two terms! In the meanwhile, enjoy it !

I’ve seldom got a seamaster from 1961, the seamaster text looks exactly the same as mine and I was also concerned about this and the fact there is no Swiss made at the Six oclock . I have researched and read that there were some that didn’t have this and before the 1960s it was not uncommon .
So I am reassured to see the text is like mine .

Sometimes the swiss Made marking is missing in 50s omegas.

Looks great! Don’t worry too much about it and enjoy it. Try some cape cod on the case to bring out the shine and maybe a distressed leather strap to set it off.
