Reaper is not free, although many perceive it as such. This is why I wanted to make the video.
It would be a bad video if I didn't spend time on the "free" part, so I tested if you could use it that way.
Please buy the software, it's great! Like I said in the video: "even for 60 bucks you can't complain".

I've used Reaper for many years and to me its the only DAW that will take many plugins without slowing or slurring. You get the general feeling that it has been designed from the bottom up to work with your CPU not against it. I have tried many DAW's but keep coming back to Reaper, for me it's like the Photoshop of DAW's very stable and is impressively flexible. The founder of Reaper is a very amiable person who was kind enough not to kripple Reaper with it's trial use, and my hat comes off to him.

I tried a lot of DAWS.
I bought reaper because it was the cheapest and the one i liked the most.
Also it is completely customizeable. You complained that the midi editor is in a seperate window, simply dock it anywhere you like.

Reaper is just ridiculously good and most of the complaints deal with the sheer magnitude of options to customize and manipulate controls (Macros) that tends to overwhelm people. But the bottom line is that it's the only DAW that you can just drag any kind of typically supported file onto any track and it just works. You can have an MP3, mono file at 96k, a stereo WAV file at 48k, a video clip and midi clip on the SAME track and they work. Not that you'd ever do that but the fact that you don't need 5 different kinds of tracks to handle all those files, is crazy.

The zooming can be changed in Reaper. You can assign pretty much any shortcut to any action in Reaper and even create custom actions and toolbar buttons.

Sidechaining is so quick. I select the track I wish to send to sidechain, hover mouse over the destination track, and hit a key. Done!

No joke it is the best recording DAW and I went school for audio engineering certified in Pro Tools use Cubase in the studio. I've also tried many other DAWS.
Reaper is bad ass.
All the plugins working it SLT guitar tones Waves plugins I have some focusrite plug-in and everything seems to be very friendly similar to logic.

Decent review, but Reaper is not free, it's $60 / $225 for a commercial license (if you make over $20k per year from your music). You can customize the scrolling behavior if you don't like it, in fact, you can customize just about anything, including the GUI.

Side chain and routine is a bit different but once you got the hang of it it's soo fun

I switched to Reaper a while ago from Cubase and don't regret it.
For the last years I worked as a scout for an advertising company which involved a lot of travelling. During a job that took longer than expected, I wanted to make some music, but I only had the business-notebook with me, so installing any software wasn't an option.
I bought an USB-Stick, a small midi-keyboard and installed the portable version of Reaper on the stick. Worked like a charm. No dongle-bullshit, no freezing, not tons of stuff I don't need etc..
If Reaper can't run an old plugin, it stops the plugin, not the daw. Much more stable than Cubase.
Currently I don't see any reason for switching back to Cubase...

I'm checking out Reaper now, and I have to say, despite it's UI it's much more robust feeling and sounding than Logic, which was what I was previously mucking around with. I'm not seasoned with working with DAWs but I already like it enough that I would happily pay 60 bucks for it. It's excellent.

Thank you for the positive review of my favorite DAW. Thank you for also mentioning that it's not actually "free, " -- as you mentioned, you can use the trial version without limitations for as long as you like. Proud registered Reaper user, here ;-)

The biggest drawback to me is that complete lack of included samples, and the primitive-looking included plug-ins. Probably not a deal-breaker, since most people use paid (or free) plug-ins, and the internet is overflowing with free samples, you just have to dig them up ;-)

What I liked most about Reaper - especially for a complete, clueless beginner like me - is the huge, active support community, and the tons and tons of Reaper tutorial videos. I tried a few other free DAW programs before settling on Reaper. It seemed intuitive (to me), and it just made sense.

Thanks again for the review!

If you would like to consider editing your post. This is obviously not your intention, but you're passing on information about how to crack REAPER!

You can create automation clips and create automation lanes from the last touched control... most of the time dont need to go to the long list.

It's not nice to imply that Reaper is "free" in your title, while giving instructions on how to "fake it" in the video. Reaper is not free. For most users, it costs $60, which includes all updates for the current and next version. The value is incredible.

Bragging about how to "fake It" for 6403 days takes the cake.

The question mark in the title makes you right and all those who correct that it is not free wrong.

PEAPER IS NOT FREE. It is free to try for up to 60 days & then you pay either $60 if you earn less than $20k a year from music, or $225 if you earn more. Might be a good idea to add the words "to try" to your title? Otherwise, a pretty cool video review.

most if not all of your complaints can be fixed with the customizations within reaper if you might still not be aware

What happens when the 60 days trial ends? Can I still choose the "Still Evaluating" and then use it?

I have a V-drumkit and I want to record when I am drumming, can I connect my kit to Reaper?
