This video shows the 105-year-old train station in Bangkok as it winds down to be replaced by a new modern facility.

The Hua Lamphong station has been serving long distance journeys across Thailand since it opened in June 1916. Rail chiefs are now moving to a modern station which will be the biggest in Southeast Asia with 26 platforms when it opens in the north of the city in July.

The Bang Sue Grand Station in Chatuchak district has cost 15 billion baht to develop and taken more than 10 years. It is in contract to the iconic old station built in an Italian Neo-Renaissance-style, with decorated wooden roofs and stained glass windows and based on the Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof in Germany.

It will be a real shame to see this very historical landmark and homage to Thailand's aspiration to become "modernized" to be torn down in the name of greed. It should at least be preserved as a museum.
