Every week Tony Abbott makes another comment that reveals very concerning social views. Commentators blow them off as "gaffes", but this isn't about gaffes. It's about values.

It's about our national character if our Prime Minister labels refugees who seek our help as "illegal", even as they exercise their legal, human right to flee danger.

It's about the message we send to young gay and lesbian Australians, if our Prime Minister talks about their equality as a "passing fashion," and what that does to their self-esteem.

It's about our values if a Prime Minister talks to "the housewives of Australia as they're doing their ironing," says his colleagues are "not just a pretty face" and have "sex appeal" and calls on his opponent to "make an honest woman of herself".

Prime Ministers reflect our national values, and have the power to change them radically. Does what Tony Abbott says matter? Well, in 17 days he wants to be speaking for all of us. That's why GetUp members are launching this ad. Will you be part of it?

Thanks GetUp! Thanks for finally taking sides by coming out in the open about your opposition to Liberal (or at least against the Liberal Leader), and in so doing your support for Labor. I've always wondered how GetUp thought that they could get away with not being pro or against either party, to being impartial.
GetUp is part of the problem Australia is caught in: a bought and paid for two party system, neither of which dare talk about Australia's REAL issues. I'm voting against both parties.

I have read that link. The problems are several fold. If you shut the detention centres what are you going to do with any new boat arrivals who exceed the intake quota?? There seems to be zero factoring-in for the event of such an eventuality. The Greens policy assumes that simply by increasing the quota the current number of boat ppl (only) will continue but will be under the quota so all will be fine. What if it leads to an increase which a perceived "softening of policy" would likely do?

I think you're right, and in a way I think it's unfair that they go back and search for stupid remarks he may have said years ago, but I think some of the views Tony Abbott holds conflict with the views of a vast number of Australians, and I simply don't think he makes a good leader. He changes his mind about policies in a second, and when faced with a difficult question, he simply runs away.

I agree but please tell me how we in the last 6 years have become creative and unsterile. Small businesses are failing at an alarming rate. Cost of living through the roof. House prices over inflated. continuing low interest rates(yes this is actually bad for the country) Aussie dollar starting to fall, University degrees which can't be used in a work force that does not exist for them, hex debt at all time highs, tafe costs through the roof. Jobs going offshore. Taxes and more taxes and more.

Physiological reasons do make equal representation in many occupations impractical. Anyone who bothers to walk through the logic of certain examples can see it (e.g my fireman example). Take another, e.g blokes shouldn't run Lamaze classes. Love for someone to tell me where he's wrong.
