The Fog of War by Philip Glass from his score of Errol Morris' film The Fog of War.

The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara is a 2003 American documentary film about the life and times of former U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara illustrating his observations of the nature of modern warfare. The film was directed by Errol Morris and features an original score by Philip Glass. The title derives from the military concept of the "fog of war" depicting the difficulty of making decisions in the midst of conflict.

The film won the 2003 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary Feature. It was non-competitively screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

In 2019, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

How do you write music for a story that encompasses the 20th Century…? A story that also combines elements of caprice and destiny. And at its center a story that asks whether war is inevitable, unavoidable, part of human nature. This is my third collaboration with Philip Glass, and I cannot think of who else could have written the music. I once told Philip that he creates a feeling of existential dread better than anyone else I know of. And this is a movie filled with existential dread. I like to think of it as music for the apocalypse, where the apocalypse is not so much the end of the world but just more of what we’ve seen before, more of the same.

As always, beautifully expressive playing where true expression lies in instrumental music: in the sound (not on the face).
And thanks for the great quote from Errol Morris "that [Glass] creates a feeling of existential dread better than anyone else."
That observation goes some way to offset insensible criticisms of 'predictability' or 'cheesiness' against a great composer from people who 'understand' music as little other than verbal representations of chords, over an arbitrarily fixed grid of time.

Thank you for your beautiful playing and for your great write-ups on the music. I would love to hear you play some of the other pieces on the two volumes of Glass piano arrangements by Michael Reisman called “Soundtracks.” I’m especially obsessed with “Neverwas Set”. Beautiful stuff.
