The 2017 book Killers of the Flower Moon, written by David Grann, is based on his own investigations into the systematic theft and brutality committed against members of the Osage Nation. The 2023 movie of the same name, directed by Martin Scorsese, is based on Grann's work and emphasizes the relationship between Mollie Burkhart and her husband, Ernest, as the conspiracy to eliminate members of her family unfolds around them.

Killers of the Flower Moon offers a glimpse into a relatively unknown historical event defined by racial injustice, greed, and murder. The true crime story reveals a dark chapter in US history as land, money, oil, and love brought death and devastation to the Osage Nation during the early 20th century.

I live in Oklahoma and this all happened not far from where I live. I never knew about this until I read the book a couple of years ago. It amazes me how it was kept in silence and not even taught in Oklahoma history in school. I’m glad it’s out now, as well as the Tulsa race riots. That was also kept silent.
Not Oklahoma related, but another one kept silent, is how Hawaii was acquired. Not by choice, but again, rich Americans wanting their land, so took it upon themselves to overthrow the Hawaiian monarchy and claim it for themselves. Should be another Weird History video, if it hasn’t already been done.

It took so many murders of the Osage before the authorities stopped being blind.

I went and saw this movie last month and it was excellent. Thank you so much Weird History for doing a video about the Osage Nation

It's crazy that the government took money like that on the basis of "competence". That's why it's important we keep checks on the IRS

The movie was great! I've seen some people say that it didn't tell enough of the story from the Osage point of view, which is fair but I think Scorsese knows his limits and that's why he sticks to the "white man's" perspective throughout most of it. If a movie is being made about this story from primarily Osage point of view, it should be an Osage-driven production.

So tragic what the native Americans had to endure

I'm glad the movie was made and stories like these are brought to light. Being from Oklahoma I have Native American heritage but no stories were passed down. The mixing of the many tribes into white culture was necessary so that they could live without being abused or pointed to. My family would be able to trace our heritage better but my ancestors didnt want the govt tracking them. I'm made of Choctaw, and Cherokee and many white cultures. People do what they can to survive despite govt control.

The Flower Moon is the first full moon of May.

It "gets its name from the bounty of flowers growing in unison in May." (thefactsite)

At the end of the book it states that now an Italian windmill co. Has been given rights to erect windmills on the Osages property. Another insult for the head rights owners.

Am I the only one that realized the visuals in this one are a little bit off? Like what is with the random Subaru with under glow at 9:45 all about? 🤣

@WeirdHistory please do a video on the Wind Talkers: the Native Americans that helped with coded messages during WW2

I think it started with the idea of giving guardianship to the wealth of the Osages. Some people out there want a piece/pieces and chunks of that wealth- the legal way.

The stock footage is way overused and doesn’t fit at all.

4:23 The image of that car reminds me of the "It Follows" film poster (2014).

The movie was good but I wished they focused more on the crimes then the criminals. This way the victims were not forgotten and we learned more about their lives.
