As a door machine gunner for the Huey helicopter during the Vietnam War, the role of the door gunner was of critical importance in providing air support and protection to ground troops. Positioned at the open doorway of the helicopter, a machine gun was operated to engage enemy targets and provide suppressive fire during combat missions.

The responsibilities of a door gunner included maintaining constant vigilance, scanning the surrounding areas for potential threats, and swiftly reacting to enemy fire.
