-Gets the entire point of the movie is to not deny or suppress emotions
-immediately refuses to cry at the emotional climax of the film

Joy is supposed to be toxic positivity. She refuses to be anything but happy and she doesn't let sadness do what she needs to do. She often represses the other emotions because she thinks that the only thing Riley should be is happy happy happy all. The. Time. So it was nice to see her accepting emotions at the end. I loved this movie though.

The moment Riley breaks down crying and tells her parents how she really feels gets me every time.

Joy x 2 = Ecstasy, Joy + Sadness = Melancholy/Nostalgia, Joy + Disgust = Intrigue, Joy + Fear = Surprise, Joy + Anger = Righteousness
Sadness x 2 = Despair, Sadness + Disgust = Self-Loathing, Sadness + Fear = Anxiety, Sadness + Anger = Betrayal
Disgust x 2 = Prejudice, Disgust + Fear = Revulsion/Phobia, Disgust + Anger = Loathing
Fear x 2 = Terror, Fear + Anger = Hatred
Anger x 2 = Rage
All islands shutting down = Depression

I love the back and forth between sadness and joy throughout the movie. Just shows you can’t truly experience joy without a little bit of sadness.

I use this in my HS Health classes and have my students create their 4 islands, during the Mental Health unit. The kids love it. It’s such a great way discuss emotions with teenagers.

I think the best thing to come out of this movie is that child psychologists are using the dolls of the emotion characters as tools to help non-verbal and autistic children express how they are feeling.

I feel like sadness is demonized alot, but the good thinf abiut this movie is that it really pointed out that through sadness someone displays a lot of empathy. And how trying to be positive all the time can be toxic and damaging when you don't listen to others and push feelings that need to come out down.

Fear runs the show in most adults, myself included. I have an anxiety disorder, PTSD, severe depression, and chronic pain, but fear is a product of all our baser instincts. Fear + Joy = excitement/adrenaline high (fight), Fear + Anger = rage/violent urges (fight), Fear + Sadness = anxiety/panic attack (freeze/flight), Fear + Disgust = rejection/aversion/complex fear and/or hatred (flight).
A symbol of my strongest core memory is literally tattooed over my heart: ❄️❄️ Edit: Memories only change color when Sadness touches them because retrograde sadness = nostalgia/regret/grief.

Toxic positivity is such a great concept for kids and it’s handled in a very understandable a beautiful way

What I find interesting is we see how and why the parents fumble that dinner scene because we see who is at the helm of their controls. With the mom, we see Sadness is head of controls, indicating that the mom is suffering from depression. With the dad, we see Anger at the head of the controls, indication he has anger issues. They're suffering through their own issues and they're not on the same page at all...

When I saw this movie in the theater, I was sobbing like a baby. I went through a really tough time in my teens when we had a sudden move my junior year and I ended up in a severe depression for 2 years. That probably created it's own continent in my brain, not just an island. lol. This movie cut super deep. One thing that I didn't notice until the second time seeing it, not sure if you noticed, but the mother's central emotion is sadness and the father's central emotion is anger.

*I think the point is that being a Positive person isn't DENYING the Negative, it's accepting their existence. Then having the willpower to not let them tear you.*

My grandmother said that crying rids the body of toxins. I dunno how true that is. But I've found a really good cry a few times a year actually DOES make me feel better, not just emotionally but physically.

I'm so sad he missed the boy at the end going into a panic over a girl. xD Also, really the best part is the end with the credits when they go inside the minds of a cat and a dog. xD

I just love how this movie shows that forcing Joy can be a toxic thing. Sometimes, you need to let yourself be sad and cry. That's a way to heal. And when the emotions finally realize that memories can be made up of more then one emotion. It's just a surprisingly deep story.

Joy is the only one which is both colors. Yellow with blue hair. Because there is no real joy without sadness

I saw somewhere that Joy is the only character that has an aura around her and its tint is blue. Blue is sadness. They were trying to get across that you don't experience joy without sadness. You have to know what being down and out feels like in order to appreciate happiness when you have it.
