I have been fortunate over the years to attend IMTS a number of times as well as EMO and most recently JMTS in Tokyo. I have always come away with new contacts and some new idea to apply. Usually it isn’t the machines themselves as you can research them and have vendors come in. I find walking the off the main track most helpful. Lots of small vendors most of which don’t really apply but I always have found a few nuggets to apply that more than offset the cost of the show.

I believe personal contact will always triumph over virtual connections. We can develop & optimise VR to convey technical things as much as possible and it will bring much benefit. But nothing beats the chemistry of conversing in person over a shared passion.

Trade shows are for learning about what you didn't know that you didn't know. I can look up anything on the internet but, if I don't even know it exists, how will it reach me? 25 years ago, I didn't own a drill press, and having a knee mill and lathe was a bucket list dream. Had no idea I could afford a CNC, nor what they were capable of. The demos at booths like Haas were invaluable in that education. Nearly all of my eventual purchases of machine tools and tooling can trace their origins back to something learned at a trade show. If someone isn't coming back absolutely overwhelmed by information, they aren't paying enough attention to the booths. There is too much for one person to know it all and every event is a chance to learn.

I was there 4 days and made a lot of connections and got a few quotes for tools and new ideas how to improve things. It was definitely worth it for me.

I think the last IMTS I attended was 2016. It does not seem so long ago. My first was 1996. The real issue I see with the trade shows is that looking at the machines does not inform you of what it can or cannot do the way it used to. Between the machines being so covered in way guards, etcetera, and needing to use the internet to find answers, the value of attending is not the same. My first IMTS was filled with so many technical lectures I nearly did not get so see the whole trade show. The last IMTS had almost nothing as I recall. People are learning from the internet, as in, from people like you. Someone needs to start doing machine reviews like car reviews. Run standard test parts with identical tooling, etc. to have real comparisons. Thank You.
