The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero - Review (PS4/PS5)

This is my review of The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero. This is the first time that the game has been officially released in the West and was originally a 2010 PSP game. Its part of the wider "Legend of Heroes" world and canonically occurs before the Cold Steel games. Unfortunately, the PS4 version of the game has not received the same upgrade treatment that the Nintendo Switch and PC version was gifted. The games official release date is the 30th of September 2022. Physical console copies WILL be available.

I'm heavily biased being a die hard fan who has played every game in the series including the two that aren't out in English yet and I'm so happy to see more people enjoying the series, The Crossbell arc is a gem and one of the highlights of the series as whole imo

Now I need Trails in the Sky on Playstation. Someone make that happen please.

As a fan I was really looking forward to this but its a bummer not having visual upgrades on ps4 version. Thanks for the review, good job as always!

So... Zero is actually a continuation of the (even older) Sky trilogy, which is currently available on Steam and often goes on sale. Sky starts with Estelle and Joshua as the protagonists and is generally agreed to as a better starting point to the series, especially because Estelle and Joshua make their appearance in Crossbell that way you already know their backstories and general personality. Not a strict requirement to play the Sky trilogy first (Zero's pretty self-contained), but most if not all Kiseki fans would highly recommend playing Sky 1, 2, 3 before you get to CS 3 / 4, that's when things really start coming together

Haven't watched your channel in a while but I'm glad that you're still around. Especially when you enjoyed one of my all-time favourite games. As a fan of the series, I can say for sure that Zero no Kiseki or Trails from Zero is the best game in the series.

From the balance of the combat, simplistic yet complex enough to be enjoyable, the good narratives and the beautiful characters, this game checked all the JRPG boxes for me.

Usually I finished JRPG games twice or thrice if I really enjoyed it but for zero, I finished it on the psp, I completed KAI on Vita and I even bought a chinese version on pc with thanks to fans translation (Geofront) who translated this game and Azure for pc.

Oh, and speaking about Geofront, the eng localization that NISA used are based on their eng fans translation.

Anyway, sorry for the long rant, I'm just excited for this game that finally saw a western release. A bit shame that there are no eng voices and the ps4 version is a bit shabby but, eh, we move...

minor nitpick with the video: I would argue the trails combat system is easy to understand, but extremely difficult to master, and is not easy to master in the slightest. Going back to Sky FC, if you only understand the combat system, there is no way you can beat Loewe on the Balcony of Grancel Castle, defeating him requires mastering the combat system, and being able to take advantage of every single edge the combat system provides. In Sky SC, it's impossible to beat the game on Nightmare mode without mastering the combat system, in particular, you need a complete understanding of defensive tactics. There is also an easily missable, hard to find quartz that you need to know how to use to beat the higher difficulties of Sky SC and Sky the 3rd.

Zero's difficulty isn't nearly as unforgiving as the last two games in the Sky trilogy, and Sky SC Nightmare mode is the hardest trails game, by far, in my opinion. However, understanding how to use rare quartzs that you only find after long side-quests are the key to defeating the hardest bosses on the highest difficulty settings.

I have PS5 and Switch available. I don't care about graphical improvements on the Switch, but what swings me towards the Switch version is implementation of larger fonts. I am quite old and my eyes are getting bad, so having all game texts larger on TV is a godsend! Also, the Switch version has a log feature for dialogs in the game and turbo-mode with scalable speeds (in/out combat independently). It's really baffling why these improvements were not ported back to PS4 version especially when fans were playing previous games on Sony platforms. I'm now expecting to see future NIS business reports stating how badly games sell on PlayStation, further increasing their reluctance to release new games there...

I don't mind that the PS4 version is just the Japan version translated in english, but I definitely agree that they should ask less money for it than Switch/PC.

Sadly I did preorder the limited edition for PS4 and I was to late to cancel it and the Switch limited edition instead. These downgrades do not bother me to much but I am not happy that NIS kept this information from us. Its not worth double dipping right away but I might get the regular Switch version down the line.

In one way I think on all versions they should have added an original visual mode and a modern one, but that may have taken 5 extra minutes. On the other hand I see it as, if someone only has a PS4, then it's time to feel grateful to actually play the game. It does suck massively that their charging the same price for a lesser product. I have noticed there is a community of gamers that still love the CRT's. So maybe that crowd would love the PS4 version and see it as a feature. Sometimes it how we look at things that can change something negative to a positive. This is why it is important to have reviewers of games that refuse to spout lies to their audience, such as your good self. I've played a few trails games before and they are well made games, the characters have depth, the things they do are interesting, even the fishing mini game had a good motivation to catch fish.

Thanks for the review. I played through the 4 Cold Steel games and plan to get Reverie as it concludes the Cold Steel games. I was originally going to pass on these, now I think I will get the Switch editions of this one and Azure. Still not sure about Boundless though.

I actually am picking this up for the PS4 for trophies. I mean, if I would be 100 percenting it, might as well get trophies for the game. I am not really that keen on the graphics as its not the graphics that makes this games. Those QoL changes though 😑

Can you tell me if the PS4 version has chest messages? These were staples in the Sky series and I've seen them in the PC and Switch gameplay but have yet to see PS4 gameplay with them in it.
