I find that when people put so much time into a layout it’s hard to decorate. What I do is make some very vague gameplay - even if that’s just placing some portals. I usually leave things like spikes and most structures out and only make what’s absolutely necessary for the gameplay. When I focus so much on structures / spikes / exact flow of the level that’s when the layout gets hard to decorate.

A bit late on this, but fantastic video! Your insights here are easy to forget when you’re in the weeds of the creating world and can take years to come back around to, so to make these conclusions and share them with others this early on is really impressive. Love the humility and respect you approach this topic with and with your unique point of view it reminds us all of why we started creating to begin with, to explore our own ideas in the most versatile level editor of all time!

This video is fantastic, I have never agreed so much with any commentary on “how to make a first level” more in my entire life. Parts about the building process, feedback process, motivation process, difference between non-demons and demons, it was literally all perfect.

As for the level, I played it before watching this video and I couldnt be less surprised by your advanced understanding of the creating process. You know exactly what to do but youre only so early in the process of improving the more technical artistic side of things so this stage is perfect. The level was awesome, totally not surprised the video was awesome too.

Seeing this gave me a big motivation boost when i was making beloved, my motivation was running low on it when i got to making the last part, my creativity was getting worse, your backgrounds gave me some inspiration for the background of the second part, and before that the motivation boost gave me help for making the last part, thank you so much man, all i can do now is wait for feedback on it and hopefully it gets rated, hopefully it gets some feedback from big creators and gets seen by more people, i know my style isnt the best but it makes me nostalgic and thats how i got my style, thinking of levels that i loved before, i know people might not care but all the advice i can give is finding your own style, look at level you love and try to inspire yourself from them, dont copy them tho
