According to legend, the city was founded by the Macedonian king Cassander and named after his wife Thessaloniki, the half-sister of Alexander the Great and the daughter of the Macedonian king Philip II, the Thessalian princess.
Halkidiki ( Χαλκιδική ) is a peninsula and the nome of the same name in northeastern Greece, on the periphery of Central Macedonia. Its capital is the city of Poliiros. Halkidiki is not only the center of beach tourism in Greece, but for thousands of Orthodox Christians around the world, Mount Athos is one of the greatest sanctuaries.
