It’s so nice to hear someone say what the actual problem is lol

the most alarming part is the doctor in the video said that HALF the world's blindness could be cured with a simple 10 minute surgery. how is this not free for everyone. jesus

Really wanna appreciate the fact that MrBeast might have inadvertently radicalized several Gen Z-ers into class consciousness, lol

_Isn't it wonderful that someone paid money to stop the orphan crushing machine from crushing orphans for a little while …_

I think Mr Beast regularly does good stuff, and I get the feeling he does it because he legitimately wants to do good. Even so, it's incredibly messed up that we live in a system where someone can be rich enough to do what he does while at the same time there exist people poor enough to do things like this for. These 1000 people should never have needed a YouTuber to come along to fix their blindness to begin with.

I wasn't shocked, I'm a leftist and as such I'm doomed to see all the flaws in our modern society, and all the people those flaws crush. Mr. Beast did a good thing, without a doubt. However, if you're anything but broken hearted by the end then you don't get it. You don't see how absolutely disgusting it is to pay-wall Healthcare. I survived Phase 4 Chronic Myeloid Leukemia by way of a bone marrow transplant. I'm American so... I had basic insurance, because that's all I can afford for my son and I, and that got me in the door. However, it covered very little and had I not been literally dying with no response to medication, they'd not have done the transplant regardless of whether or not the meds could have saved me. In other words, had the meds worked enough to extend my life slightly then that'd be it. But they didn't work at all so their hands were forced. I'm in remission. The transplant "cured" me. That was luck. What wasn't luck? I owe over $300, 000 when I bring home just $38, 000 per year at best and it's just me and my son so that ain't much. I'll never pay that off and the hospital said "that's ok, we can take payments forever if necessary" and they thought that was comforting 🤮. I had a genetic disorder that caused my cancer and now I'm in debt forever. Is that right??? Forget me, I'll be fine, bit think of everyone else dealing with that. It's overwhelming

Its good to know that mr beast cured blind people

Its bad though that we need to rely on the good graces of a young billionare to help us instead of our government.

This is less of a bad look for mrbeast and more of a bad look for the government

And he didn't even pay the medics until the medics exposed him for the non-payment

i equate it to the dilema of "wholesome philanthropist donates 1 million dollars to spare 10, 000 children from the mandated child grinding machine"
sure the act is "nice" but why is no one asking the question "why TF is there a child grinding machine in the first place?"

Its not that doing this is bad. It's the fact that this needed to be done and how it's done that is so horrifying.

The system is the problem.
We need to focus on the system, we should judge the people who use it separately.

The video says more to the fact that most blind people can be cured and are not because they can't afford it than anything else. Shining a light to clean up only a portion of a messed up system. It's certainly not Mr. Beast's fault, and I think everyone else has the ability to fight this at the root of the problem more than he can

Only had this in my suggested feed just recently - that is, AFTER it came out that Mr. Beast didn’t actually pay for the procedures until people realized he hadn’t yet lol

I have very mixed feelings about this thing as a whole. But I think I can summarize it into three main points.

First, Mister Beast doing this is, on the individual perspective extremely good. He deserves nothing but praise for this. 1000 people who couldn't see before, and may have continued on for months, years, or likely the rest of their lives, like this, can now see. That's a good thing. Period.

Second, I don't really like that he had to make such a bombastic video about it, but if that's how he is able to afford acts of kindness like this, then I think it's okay? Like, it would be nicer if it wasn't the case, but we do live in a late-stage capitalist hellscape, and this seems like a relatively ethical way to pay for it so at the end of the day, I can live with it.

Third, and I think this is where most of the "dystopic" feelings come from, is that this video is emblematic of a ton different twisted socio-economic forces at play in our society. The fact that such a thing even was needed instead of these people just getting this treatment at as early an age as possible. The fact it is possible to be "monetized". And the fact that that isn't even that bad all things considered.
Which all come together to just really hit people over the head with the fact that our society is broken. It's one that cares more for extracting wealth and entertainment than it does the wellbeing of the people who make up the society. It's horrifying every time these things become apparent again. This video is just the latest of a long string of similar cases.

I forget the exact phrasing but I see a tweet every now and again that reads "every heart warming story from America sounds like "millionaire donates money to stop orphan crushing machine from crushing 10000 orphans" but never stops to ask why the orphan crushing machine exists or why it needs to be fed money to stop temporarily"

Nice! Great take! However I also think it’s noteworthy to point out the two things that are MrBeast’s fault here:
1. The use of the word “cure” when talking about blindness (simple enough for a general audience, but inaccurate and thus potentially misleading about the nature of blindness)
2. And the clickbait. Because there were only 50 confirmed people I found before the video’s release, and that cheque he gave at the end is where the other 950+ will be funded, just without specifying where.

we shouldn't have to rely on a rich youtuber's act of kindness (or content motivation) in order to restore our health. our current system has made it a mini game where we have earn our healthcare. we deserve healthcare just because and not based on how much money we have or how much we "contribute" to society. we deserve to be alive regardless of our circumstances.

What's fucked up too is that a lot of people are celebrating how these people can "go back to work".

This whole thing reminds me of the hypothetical orphan crusher. Imagine a "hero" rescuing 50 orphans from an orphan crushing machine. Heartwarming, I know. The story will be all over the news. A heartwarming rescue from the orphan crushing machine, they'll tell the "hero's" story and everything. But that spectacular story ends up preventing you from asking: "Why was there a machine built to crush orphans in the first place?"

Idk before Mr. Beast did this I didn't see anyone out in the streets demanding the government cure the blind or starting GoFundMe's to cure blind strangers.Tbh I don't think people really care and just want to feel a part of something bigger and this just happens to be that thing. Until the next thing comes along. Of course 🤷
