I don't know if this is true or not, but I have started to notice horror books get lower ratings on Goodreads and it's making me wonder if the Goodreads userbase isn't great with horror. A lot of horror book I've really enjoyed have extremely low ratings and it kind of surprises me.

I love that you give out five stars! ☺️ so many people even give their favourite books 4 stars 😂 I understand as no book can be perfect, but I still like to give 5 stars and use the full star system like you do- which means not being shy about giving 5 stars where I see fit ☺️

I believe the big reason for the low rating of The Tenth Girl can be found in the review of my fellow Brazilian native descendant Mayra Sigwalt. What she points out gives a new perspective on the book.

I heard mixed reviews before I read Catherine House, but I also ended up really liking it.

Very fun video! I've not read any of these as horror and literary fiction aren’t really my bag, but very interesting that some of these have such low ratings. The unmatchable bachelor sounds good

So, you're pretty dead on for why Ship It is disliked. It's based on a real event, that did not happen to the author, and has been wildly misrepresented over the years at least in part because of this book. The person, and question, this is based on has a very different version of how things happened and how she felt about it at the time.

I've never read it myself, but I've also heard that it is not very accurate to the fandom experience.

Man, I love Catherine House. I admit, though, that as I was starting to read it, I thought, "I'm going to hate this." It's bizarre, and slow, and heady, and confusing, with no clear plot goals. And more people need to give it a chance.

Damsel is good but it is disturbing and not what I expected at all when I picked it up.

My lowest rated 5 star is “My Summer of Love and Misfortune” by Lindsay Wong. I thought it was hilarious, with a ridiculous MC who was definitely meant to be unlikeable, and the book itself is very satirical. Many (many! The book is rated 2.8 stars) people hated the MC and could not continue because of that. It’s too bad since it’s one of the funniest books I’ve ever read.

I’ve read Damsel and I liked it a lot i think i gave it four or five stars as well! With Catherine House, I picked it up because everyone was saying it was a really weird and I love weird so I was expecting something along the lines of Bunny or Annihilation. When I picked it up I found the weird elements really underwhelming and found it frustrating when the main character spent most of the book avoiding the elements I came to read about. I think the writing and atmosphere were really good and I could have liked it if it were a novella or short story, but I’m just not the type who can enjoy 300 pages of “no plot just vibes.”

I'm so happy that you also enjoyed Womb City. Sad the ratings are so low

I have read Madam, Katherine House & The Dinner from this list. I really enjoyed all three... didn't realize they were unpopular at all! Goliath is on my TBR, this just might help me get to it sooner. This was interesting, Thanks!

I had to read The Dinner for school and absolutely hated it, but also i was 15, so maybe if i would reread it, i might like it more.
I only started tracking my reads on GR last year and didn't go back to add books i read before that, so i only have 1 year and 8 months worth of reading on there, but the 5 star with the lowest average rating is Unseelie by Ivelisse Houseman with a 3.76. this makes me really sad as it was my number 1 favorite book of last year

I have never heard of any of these books. How do you even find lower rated books? 😅

For me, it seems it is more likely that I hate a book that others love .. Midnight Library, for example.
