This is the right balance between the "what if oil companies just didn't oil?" and "what if everyone just stopped buying things?" unhelpful positions. It's complicated and if there's anything we can realistically do, we should do it. Liberating ourselves from car dependency is fairly straightforward and has the added benefit of helping people stop complaining about how expensive things are all of the time. Uh, yeah it's because we chose that because of consumerism and classism. If we can get where we need to go via trains, bikes, and walking, we can save an enormous amount of money. But instead of spending our money on things that make us healthier and happier, we spend it on pretending to be richer than each other. We simultaneously need governments to facilitate a less destructive and better ways of living and to culturally break the spell of consumerism so that we can make smarter and more ethical choices.

There is simply no way of reconciling capitalism and sustainability... It becomes splitting hairs whether the companies are to blame or their customers, whether governments and nation-states with many state-owned oil companies should be blamed or not... Everything is entangled in this systemic issue, because capitalism is totalizing - it expands and dominates all aspects of life.

You are the female Rollie Williams - there are definitely strong Climate Town vibes from your videos (that's a very good thing!) And yes a lot of the more impactful things you can do are the boring ones - like contacting representatives and contributing to planning feedback. There is a really good climate group I follow called Parents for Climate (the students said "go and make your own") that has a really good Facebook group and is getting involved in a lot of areas of climate advocacy.

I find it weird to blame oil companies when all of those are effectively state owned. Even the ones that are not would probably be nationalized very quickly if the interests of their respective country were under threat which means they are also pretty much a tool of a nation just that they have the fake veneer of free enterprise taped onto them.
