The point of a war of attrition is not to hold any particular place forever. Rather, it is to make your enemy pay more for the place than it is worth, while ensuring that you pay less than losing it is worth. Thus every tiny 'victory' your enemy 'achieves', brings them closer to defeat. Ukraine has done that consistently, extremely well.

The A-10 is not the right jet for this war. It can be very, very successful if you have complete control of the air, but when the airspace is contested, it's quite vulnerable.
