The Chinese Navy takes a page out of the US Navy's F/A-18 playbook with the J-15. One jet doing it all. Sort of.

Just FYI, have you ever seen any Flankers with external tanks? Because they don’t need them. The internal fuel capacity for J-15 is 9, 500 kg (20, 900 lb). The tanker version probably is modified and has more. The super hornet’s external fuel capacity: Up to 4 × 480 gal (1, 800 L) tanks, totaling 13, 040 lb (5, 914 kg). Internal fuel capacity: F/A-18E: 14, 700 lb (6, 667 kg), F/A-18F: 13, 760 lb (6, 241 kg).
Since the only two in-service Chinese carriers are with ski jump takeoff, the J-15 is probably takeoff weight limited. Before the catapult carrier enters service, the J-15 tanker is the only viable solution and not a bad solution. Future catapult carriers will have tanker tankers.

I like Wombat's tin-foil helmet theory about tricking PLAN Aviation into developing the J-15 into a jack of all trades, master of none plane. I wouldn't bank on it for planning purposes, but it's worth a chuckle.

These people really discussing tactics while watching an air show designed to show off the plane's maneuverability and stun a crowd.

It's like watching a military parade of soldiers marching in formation during modern times and asking: "would this be a useful combat tactic?"

the J35 is like the F35 except in basically every design aspect. i mean for example Wombat has a very similar silhouette to a sasquatch but does that mean he is related to Big Foot? Likely not.
