Dr. Ross Clevens: What is MOHS surgery? MOHS surgery is a unique type of skin cancer surgery that allows us to remove all of the skin cancer, while preserving as much normal tissue as possible. What's unique about the growth of some skin cancer, is they can often be like a tree with roots. As you look at the surface, you seen only the trunk of the tree or you see only the visible skin cancer that acts underneath the surface. The skin cancer can be growing like the roots of the tree or tentacles.

The purpose of MOHS surgery is to remove not only the visible skin cancer but also to remove all the underlying skin cancer that maybe spreading beneath the surface of the skin. What MOHS surgery allows us to do is that it allows a surgeon to achieve the highest possible cure rate, oftentimes the 97 to 99% cure rate range, while also preserving as much normal tissue as possible. You preserve as much normal tissue as possible, so there's less to repair after the skin cancer surgery. If you've been diagnosed with skin cancer, basal cell skin cancer, squamous cell skin cancer or even in some cases melanoma. You may find that MOHS surgery is the right type of treatment for you.
