I love my K20A3. Parts are cheap for it, it's more reliable, quick enough for spirit driving, and you dont have to worry much about your RSX getting stolen since you only have a base model engine

The Initial D clip alone is worth a thumbs up.

Side note: the R18A1 and R18Z1 engines get the same hate as the K20A3. 🤦🏿‍♂️

Below 3000rpm it’s on 12 valves (fuel efficiency) then over 3000rpm it operates on 16 valves. And then after 4800rpm your in VTEC

In terms of reliability and replacements goes, a3 is definitely a bargain. It's pretty quick for what it's worth, and it doesn't break the bank to throw a few bolt ons. Definitely a fun budget motor if you go this route. Other than that, K24 is your next best thing.

after kpro and full bolt ons, my k20a3 made 150 whp on a mustang dyno. doesn't sound like much, but the engine was solid as a rock and would easily chirp third gear.

The a3's are perfect for boost due to the lower compression ratio and reliability.

I have A3 and Z3, both great engines.From what i can tell, A3 is a low compression/slimmer rods A2 minus oil cooling/injection for cyls, 3 stage VTEC cams(the corresponding valvetrain) and some material shrouding valves on A3 heads.So deshroud valves, some "real VTEC" OEM cams with some Nippon "A2" pistons(get an A2 rebuild kit)and youd have a "poor mans A2" lol

In Europe we get the K20A3 in a 5 door Civic. It is fun and fast, relatively speaking, but it has an electronic throttle body...meaning we are in trouble when want to get more power out of it than you guys are over in the US.

Smaller rods, less weight the crank has to move. A2 vtec and piston swap and you'll basically have an a2.

Well the block is same as k20a2 without the oil squirts...but those can be installed easily....plus you could take all the internals from a type s and put it in.

What youre describing with the second cam lobe engaging literally is vtec. What they mean by "real vtec" is having vtec on both the intake and exhaust cams. That's it. You can however upgrade your cams and just flow more air out the gate on the exhaust side.

Just put a a2 head on the a3 block. It's simple and you. An get a full head for around 250-300. It's It's simple job and direct bolt on

Also you do need the A2 cylinder head. Otherwise if you just get the exhaust rockers and cams your car will always be engaged in VTEC but if you get the cylinder head also it’ll work normally

I mean for the "less" good kseries 2.0 liter it's still a pretty good 2 liter compared to others

My rsx is a base and i beat a 06 type s by half a car. I have kpro and my base came with a fa5 z3 t6 speed lsd trans. Have a type s intake manifold and throttle body and header.

I think you could get 200+ hp with the automatic as well....I’ll soon get the k20a2 internals and tune with the fbo already so it’ll go well 💯
