How to Paint a Deck

If you have a wood deck that’s seen better days, you may want to paint it to bring it back to life. And while this would certainly classify as a DIY project, there’s a bit of preparation to ensure the end result fits the bill. In this video, we’ll show you how to prep and paint a deck:

Proper surface preparation will go a long way when tackling a deck recoating project. Here’s some things to address first:
• Clean the deck - use a deck cleaner and a stiff brush, to remove any dirt, mildew or debris
• Rinse the deck - using a hose, or even better a power washer, wash away any remaining debris
TIP: be sure to use a low setting so as not to damage the wood surface
• Fix any loose deck boards and replace any that are too far gone from rot
• Deal with cracks - using a non-silicone-based crack filler and a putty knife, be sure to smooth out when applying
• Protect the outlying area - using plastic tarps held in place by painters tape so they stay clean during the priming and finishing process

Once the deck is clean and dry, the priming and coating process can begin:
• Make sure the weather forecast looks good for a 24-hour period (ideal temperature is between 50F and 90F)
• Using a long-handle wood roller and paint brush, apply the primer to the deck, rails and posts
o NOTE: this application uses RustOleum’s RESTORE Deck Start Wood Primer
• Let the deck dry for up to two hours after priming
• Now you’re ready to apply your deck coating of choice

So I can use any external deck paint after the primer? Do I need to use primer if I am painting with external paint? I noticec some don't use primers before applying external paint

We put Behr Deckover on ours years ago but we’re trying to peel it all off now because it turned into a mess. Can you just put the primer right over top of the Deckover we can’t get peeled off? And then put a solid stain over it.

Hi I want to repaint my deck white but others tell me paint is bad. To use stain instead. Can I use white exterior paint or will it bubble and ruin the wood?

NEVER roll a deck. Take the time to brush it, it will last a lot longer

You don't PAINT a coating...you APPLY a coating. Change your title...that aint how to PAINT a deck.
