Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Old people like me keep yelling at clouds that music production has become too easy: MPC s are DAW s in a box now, even if you suck at making beats, Splice got you covered and AI is capable of creating better tracks than me.

Today we are going to talk about the Boss SP-303. This iconic drum sampler from the year 2001 is the exact opposite of all these modern shenanigans: the OG Lo-Fi sound, about as much polyphony as a Mongolian throat singer and a workflow that feels like setting the skill level of Doom to Ultra Nightmare.

I don’t need another sampler, I don’t need another sampler, I don’t need another sampler…

Using a Digitakt II purely as a midi sequencer for a quarter century old sampler is peak DAWless jamming

Every Bad Gear episode teaches us valuable lesson - there's no bad gear if you have talent like Florian.

"Let's be honest, most SP-303s are part of an early 2000's hip-hop cos-play kit." LOL! Someone call the fire department, because that burned!

That. Fucking. Intro. This is one of my favourite Bad Gear episodes ever - holy crap, dude. Did the SP-303 justice, discussed its history in enough depth to really make it clear why these things are important, and just absolutely killed all the jams. You really are one of the most talented producers on this platform.

Oh wow the intro blew the roof off! And that final jam was succulent

I can't believe that last Friday I received the SP-303 I bought and just a week later this video came out. Greetings from Argentina.

"Early 2000's hip hop cosplay" is accurate

Probably your most intense 3rd jam that I’ve seen! You’re a mad man Florian, never stop!

My 303 turned 21 this year. I bought to play samples in a death metal band, since laptops were frowned upon for live use back then. 😂 Later on it lived on the send/return of my turntable mixer for a number of years, as an effect processor. Finally about 9 years after buying it, I started using it to make beats. It's a pain in the ass to make full tracks on, but definitely a gem for what is does well.

I bought one in the early 2000's for about $100, and sold it last year for $450. Better value than the share of Yahoo I bought around the same time

The 303's bigger brother, the SP-505, is a hidden gem in the SP line.
