A U.S. emergency phone line with the Russian military for rapid communications is now working, as the security situation inside Ukraine deteriorates further.
When the U.S. military called the line it was answered, a defense official said, after the first offer from the Pentagon for a “deconfliction line” with the Russian Defense Ministry was rejected.
The move comes as things grow ever more fraught on the ground, with heavy fighting near key cities and fears the humanitarian disaster could be compounded by an environmental one. That’s after a brief fire at a training center attached to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant that Ukraine said was caused by Russian bombing.
