The 511 are the only jeans I wear after years of buying baggy jeans that were not flattering. I do not do hard outdoor work in these jeans, however. My tips for keeping them nice are to gently brush any dirt stains off, and do not wash them. Instead keep them in the freezer. I spray mine with Vodka twice a year while hanging up outside. I also have used a home dry cleaning solution a few times which seemed to brighten them up. Beyond that they fit great, and the color is beautiful. The waist does seem to stretch a bit and the pants can sag after maybe 100 wearings (I get 300+ wearing out of each pair of mine before I replace them) but you can just wear a belt to solve that.

Mainline 501s aren’t great anymore, a lot of people say the premium line is what mainline used to be though and they seem like a good buy on sale. If you really want better quality with the classic fit look at orslow 105 or 107 depending on preference, the sugarcane 1966 in my opinion are “ivy”, or if you want something cheaper and don’t mind searching, look for old miUSA Levi’s. The fit did change over the years but you could also look for 550s 619 505 etc. you really need to decide what you want then decide on a budget to find your ideal pair.

I started wearing 501's about 5 years ago and they still feel too thick and stiff to me. I tried on some 511's today and the difference was night and day. They felt much softer and flexible, probably due to the fact that the 501's are 100% cotton while the 511's are 98%. I get the 100% cotton is better quality, but I care more about comfort.
Also, while I thought the button fly was cool at first, it's not very practical. It makes visits to the urinal pretty annoying lol.
