“The tank was originally invented to clear the way for the infantry in the teeth of machine gun fire. Now it is the infantry who will have to clear a way for the tanks.” Winston Churchill

The main disadvantage of having limited elevation on the gun is that T-72s are at even greater disadvantage when fighting in hilly or mountainous terrain. The tank 'hull down' position enables any tank to be able to fire over hills like sitting behind a fence and only your head and gun showing.
The hull of the tank cannot be hit by direct fire because of the hill that is in the way.

However, T-72s cannot get into such a 'hull down' position because of the limited elevation of their gun. So they have to move closer to the crest of the hill, revealing more of themselves to direct enemy fire. Most if not all Soviet era built tanks suffer from this deficiency.

This helped the Israeli Armed Forces to defeat numerous enemy tanks during the Six Days' War in hilly or mountainous terrain.

1. Create a cheap tank without good fighting abilities
2. Mass produce the tank
3. Hide the flaws from other nations
4. Sell the tanks for a heafty profit

Idiot Move: Rely on a century old tank and ignore the shortcomings, because numbers go high and people think more tanks more victory.

T-72, T-90 and T-90A are practically the same as far as safety is concerned.

Also the crew survivability was not totally ditched. It's just that the construction is so effin old that it doesn't have some of the safety features of later tank developments. Don't forget that this construction is derived from the T-64, which means that it's base has been laid down in the 50s, which means that the height of safety was trying to not get hit, hence the flat profine, and ammo concentrated at the bottom of the tank if possible. It's construction contemporaries are not the Leopard 2 and Abrams, but M48 and M60, which really aren't that much safer. If someone is surprised that the tanks are falling to weapons specifically made to counter them and 40 years younger then they really shouldn't be.

T-72B3 didn't have the Arena APS as standard AFAIK. There was a lot of talk about development, but how many thanks actually got it I dare not say.

Tanks cannot survive without infantry support.

10:50 - Read up on Formula 1 and other racing cars before the 1970s. Fuel tanks were all around the drivers, and a crash could turn them into a roman candle, or a barbeque. Today's race cars have fuel tanks that are hard to damage (kevlar and rubber bladders). The Russians have apparently not learnt anything.

I'm a humble man from Czech Republic 🇨🇿, it warms my heart, seeing Russian military equipment and soldiers being destroyed! Sláva Ukrajině 🇺🇦

These tanks are very good at fulfilling their primary role as moving targets.

I love the turret toss compellations... Found one turret in the 8th floor of a building it launched so high.

The Infographics Show After effects team must be crunching extra hard to make a video on Prigojin's little outing.

Even though the T-72 is pretty bad, the Russians are gonna wish having a T-72 instead of a T-54 ;-;

There are a few things you forgot.

From the T-72 on, the tank's turret ring is not actually level with the tank itself. Its depressed a few degrees, so it has more depression than 5 degrees.

T-72s also have a low reverse speed, with a top speed of 2.6 mph (or 4.18429 Kph) this means that the tank would have to turn the entire hull around to be able to retreat. If you don't know much about tanks, this is bad, because the parts with the most armor (The front upper glacis) is facing AWAY from the enemy, exposing its engine.

All "modern" Russian vehicles rely on auto loaders (besides their Anti Air systems), the list of vehicles includes the T-64, BMP-3, 2S25, T-80, T-90, T-72, and the T-14 Armata. Western tank producers experimented with autoloaded guns, but found them impractical for main battle tanks, but useful on light vehicles (Look at the XM-803 or the MBT-70 projects for the MBTs, and but autoloaders are found on vehicles like the German Begleitpanzer 57)

Russian tanks also rely on numbers and integrated ERA named KONTAKT-5. If you don't know, ERA is used to stop chemical rounds, like HEATFS (High Explosive Anti-Tank Fin Stablized, AKA RPG rounds) Western Countries use ERA in upgrade kits, like the TUSK for US tanks, for urban combat (TUSK stands for Tank Urban Survival Kit).

I actually thought that this was going to be about the T-14 from the title
Even if we exclude the 20 t-14's that were made as proof of concept there is the T-92 that was built after the T-72's

I’d love to see a video discussing the top five or ten times an David beat the Goliath in a war. Where would the Russo-Ukrainian War stack up with the defeat of the Spanish Armada or the Vietnamese wars of Independence?
