Why I Stopped Doing Kettlebell Swings

Why I Stopped Doing Kettlebell Swings \\ A few months back I did a kettlebell swing challenge where I swung 200 times a day with 70 lbs. Since then, I have only swung a kettlebell a few times. Even though there are many benefits to kettlebell swings, in this video I talk about why I haven’t done them in so long. This is a good lesson on how to stay consistent. \\ Video by SchuyFit, Schuyler Diehm

Kettlebells allow for nearly unlimited complexity.

Did you explore the clean and press? The snatch? The turkish getup?

I default to my faithful bells because they allow me to do all the loaded movements human in a short amount of time. Hinge, squat, lunge, push, pull and carry.

I got bored of doing 100 swings a day after 4 months also.

I love kettlebell swings, I done 200 swings but not everyday. I’ll have to try this for sure.

True. Sanity-fuelled activities seem to have better results.

I am quite surprized - 200 KB swings a day is too much? Especially for an exceptionally strong guy like you?
You could have taken a couple of weeks break and resumed it in a different way - like, say - doing it only 5 days a week and that too split over 2 sessions of 100 swings each. Also you could have reduced the KB weight from 30 kg to around 15-18 kgs. Hope you resume soon! Pls let me know!

Were you "greasing the groove, " doing sets of 10 -20 throughout the day or were you doing them all at once?

I overdid the use of kettlebells myself. It felt like it completely drained my energy. It even affected my day to day physical activities.
Just completely drained...it took me about 90 days just to feel any better and back up to

You can do 300 a day in 8 minutes. That's hardly excessive.

Kettlebells are so much fun compared to barbells and dumbbells.
Exercise does NOT need to be fun, you just have to have a solid mindset and get it done. Consistency. Don't quit

No workout routine will hold your interest or enthusiasm forever. Always be looking forward to changing things up after a couple of months.

Do your 200 a day, get it done, live your life. Save excess time training.

It's time to go heavier if it gets boring.

kettlebell swings are a great accessory exercise for me on deadlift days. deadlifts are great for intensity but can be limited for volume - swings are great for that.

I'm in the same boat, the workouts I do each day for the most part are just going to be something different each day as much as I can....it will never be the most efficient or highly optimized way to get to my goals or someone's goals but its a way that's kept me engaged into fitness and working out. Everyone is different but standing there and doing the same routine for 100 days becomes a job eventually and you'll not want to do it anymore. I have to play the long game here, the moment when I worry about maximizing every variable is when I'll probably start burning out.

30 days challenges are a good way to change a habit. But overdoing it leads to burn out. For instance i start my day with drinking a glass of water this way. 5 years later still doing it. Small change, but huge over 5 years of everyday. Think about it.
