Two Double Neck Guitar: “By the middle of the Trick of the Tail Tour, Mike switched from his Microfret bass/Rickenbacker 12 string double neck over to a custom 6 string bass and 12 string twin neck guitar by luthier Dick Knight."
"Mike Rutherford, 1976: I'm in the middle of changing over now. I use an older double-neck-with a bass and guitar, a Microfret - the company's out of business now. It's a great recording bass but not so good on stage - but recently I've had a new custom double-neck built. At the moment I'm attached to the old one so l can only write on that. I have to break the new one in - I can't write on and instrument that I don't know well.”
However, this custom instrument was also unstable on stage and was subsequently retired from live use.

Others, over the years:
- Rickenbacker 660/12 and 4003 Double Neck.
- Shergold Custom Double 12/14
(Unconfirmed:
Steinberger double neck
Gibson sg double neck)

(The rights of these songs don't belong to me. I am not any company and I don't have a profit-making job, so this video is only to share and promote what I love.)

Mike Rutherford (Tony Banks, too) - the most prominent music writers in Genesis. That was 50 yrs ago as well, in the 5 & 4 piece days. Yet Mike gets so criminally under mentioned in this band. I thank you for putting this compilation together!

Mike always put a rickenbacker pickup on the 12 string in every double neck he own except for the shergold and the strata headless

Mike used 4 different double necks during this period, not just two. 1973-74: Rickenbacker double, 74-76: Rickenbacker/Microfret, 1976: custom, 1977-1981: Shergold modular (configured as 4/12 or 4/6). He had another one for the Mama tour and of course another on reunion tours.

I don't care what anyone thinks... with ot without Gabriel, Genesis was great while they still played Prog.

I saw Mike Rutherford with the Mechanics once and him solo with a backup band, and he is an amazing guitarist.

Toni, thank you for making a video of Mike!
Mike is a little plain, so few people take it away.

I guess he used the Ricky as 12 string bass combo...then I saw a 12 string 6 string combo plus his Shergold axes

When I was 13 I thought he was a semi-god from some “middle earth”

It's great. But I think he should have continued doing this more inventive and creative stuff rather than becoming more of a mainstream bass player.
