Jeju Air flight 7C2216, arriving from the Thai capital Bangkok with 175 passengers and six crew on board, was attempting to land shortly after 9 a.m. at the airport in the south of the country, South Korea's transport ministry said.

Two people, both crew members, were rescued, and officials have suggested the rest are presumed dead.

It is the deadliest air accident ever on South Korean soil, and the worst involving a South Korean airline in nearly three decades, according to ministry data.

There was similar landing in Toronto, Air France, AB A340 overran the runway and skidded way beyond the port, but they managed to save everyone because the plane had enough space to slow down and stop in relative safety. So yeah, this was totally preventable.

This is so sad. The pilot was an expert, only one engine, no landing gear. I think South Korea itself is going to run into their own wall

When a plane is unable to deploy its landing gear, airports can assist with a "belly landing" by preparing a specially designated runway area with features like: thick foam pads, crash cushions, specially designed surfaces to absorb impact, and readily available emergency response teams to minimize damage and ensure passenger safety upon landing.

They keep emphasizing "bird strike cause of crash" as a way for a natural cause to avoid having the blame on them, yet the actual cause of death was the stupid reinforced concrete wall they built as a foundation for the signaling mechanism at the end of the runway. What a brainless decision to erect that thing there. If it wasn't for that everyone should have lived.
