I have one with even less wear. Unfortunately, someone put a hole in it. This is my only Roman gold coin. I bought it from a reputable dealer in the 1980s for only a little above the gold value — $130 !

These coins were primarily used for paying the army which is likely the reasons for the soldier portrait of the emperor (see my article 'who is the audience, emperor?' for more information)

Goes to show that solidi can really misrepresent what an emperor looked like (assuming the bust of Leo I is really him).

It looks a strange colour compared to earlier (and even later) solidii. Is that just the video lighting or prehaps toning/debasement? The strong gold sections on the reverse are interesting.
