Welcome to the first FlippedNormals Q&A!

00:41 - Can you get a job if do 80% of your work in ZBrush?

04:02 - There is quite a lot of pessimism in many forums concerning getting jobs and work conditions in the vfx industry. As a beginner that can be quite intimidating. Are those comments true?

10:54 - How software licenses are handled in the industry? Which ones are provided by your employer? Which ones do you pay out of your pocket? How can a freelancer survive?

15:22 - Why isnt modo more popular?

19:38 - What are your go-to time-saving process shortcuts when working in 3D? (to be clear, I mean the sometimes-messy things that expedite the process, not keystrokes!)

26:02 - Which one of you actually does the sculpting in your videos?

26:57 - Can you clarify your names?

28:14 - Whats your backstory and how did you get started with CG?

32:55 - Can I get a job if I didnt complete school?

34:19 - Does it bring more value to bring your reel to a recruiter at FMX than it does to send them an email?

36:25 - Dos and Dont's of emailing companies for jobs?

36:19 - How do you determine what asset or section of a character deserves more attention and time?

42:05 - How do you study color theory?

45:26 - What you guys feel has had the biggest impact on your industry, be it PBR shading, or software or film that was released the fundamentally changed how you guys did something?

For all the beginners out there who do not feel good about the pessimism in the industry, look at different kind of industry. I like doing 3D art, yet I am not in the games or the film industry. Where am I? Oil and gas. I know it sounds weird, but here I get so many liberties and benefits I would not be getting in the games/film industry, because there are very few artist wanting to come here. So look for other industries that can use your skills as an artist. I might make a video about this later.

PS: Please don't saturate my market xD

Thank you for all of your videos. I think of all my time on YouTube trying to find help on modelling, sculpting, retopologizing, etc. You guys had the most insightful information going forward for me. Was a steep learning curve but it is all clear to me. Wishing you two and the channel nothing but the best from here on :)

Guys, thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. Here in Brazil, we don't have such mentors like yourselves... probably because we don't have a lot of studios that produce games or films with VFX. I'm so grateful for this work that you do, long live Flipped Normals!

Great video guys. I'm a Modo artist who started learning 3d using Softimage back in the mid 2000's, and I replaced XSI with Modo in 2013 (after Autodesk bought and killed it), and it was great, easy to adopt. With that said, things like animated characters are a pain to animate (unless you have a high end GPU) because of deformer speed...

I'm working on a facial rig and I'm already afraid to animate it.

Modo - I was taught Modo in school from 2014-2015 and it's done NOTHING for me. I'm super proud/grateful of myself that I've taught myself 3DS Max before I even went to school because that's what I got a job using. Learning the theory and skill set in Modo was fine and I have the software under my belt but learning a wide spread industry software is still necessary. My old instructor is STILL pushing Modo on to students and it's just not right to do in my eyes as I've only seen 2 decent jobs (in my eyes) for modo in the past 4 years and I check weekly.

Great video guys! please consider doing more of these or even just a weekly podcast? I think that could really be something worthwhile

With regards to the keeping up with software. Probably the best thing is to read the release notes with every release, or in the case of Substance & Blender (probably others) they have video release notes.

Re: ReTopology. The only times I ever consider relying on some sort of automatic retopology generated by a program like Zbrush or InstantMeshes or something like that is if the asset is not going to deform in any way AND it's shape is basically mostly convex and uhhh...solid? I'm not sure how to describe what I mean but the mesh can't have lots of thin/skinny parts that stick out in places or overlap a lot. Finally, the high poly ref mesh more or less has to have a uniform distribution of low, and mid freq detail because the auto-retopo algorithm won't regard areas of interest and higher density detail and treat them with more importance and the low density detail areas with less importance unless I spend extra time screwing around trying to pain densities or mess with loops etc. in an attempt to get it to do so.

Rocks and terrain and once in a while bas relief ornamental stuff and sculpture are almost the only places where I might just let a program retopo for me...even then though, things can come out trash and I have to spend as much time fixing the trash as I would have just doing the retopo manually.
