NASA Aeronautics And Space Report No.28 (1966)

This short is color by fade, but it still holds some gems from the space news of 1966, intended for viewing in schools. A look at the mission of Lunar Orbiter 3 and Surveyor 1, and an interesting glimpse into the techniques of casting models for supersonic wind tunnel testing. This was transferred from my own 16mm archive print using my Eiki Telecine. The Eiki projects a 24fps print at 30 frames per second for a flickerless NTSC transfer. A special diffusion plate eliminates the 'hot spot' of the projector, and the sound is pulled right from the optical track. Enjoy!

Thanks, Fran. I have vague memories of seeing this in my 5th grade class in 1966.

These films are fantastic! Being an old fart in my late sixties, these films bring back so many memories of my childhood. I was a "space fanatic" during the 1960's, I still am today.

I wonder if any of those models still exist. They are works of art. Thanks for what you do Fran x

The opening clip brought an instant memory flash of high school (mid-1960's) ... I was on the A/V crew, and spliced a lot of film - and reel-to-reel audio tape. Thanks!

When I think of the moon mission, I often focus on Apollo 11's landing. Of course, a lot went into getting ready for that. I like learning about all the testing and learning NASA did to prepare. Thanks, Fran.

Thanks Fran! This is unique material, very much worth saving and restoring. Incredibly smart, valuable techniques when digital was still in its infancy. I bet hardly anybody remembers this. Thanks for the effort and care!

I don't think I ever heard about Lunar Orbiter 1 and Surveyor 1...so I will be spending the afternoon learning about that. Thanks Fran!

4:10 - 4:33 -- Cool to see the model of the XB-70 Valkyrie! I'm too young to have seen this new in school (though I *had* been born a few months prior), but one of my favorite books from the school library when I was in 7th & 8th grade was about the Valkyrie, written when it was still the FUTURE of American defense.... ;-)
