I totally understand. I was driving trucks, tractor-trailers, cross country, as a company driver. I was clearing 2k a week and flat out quit, walked away. I'd done this truck driving thing for the past twelve years. The offices that run these trucking companies are absolutely toxic. The drivers are second class citizens at these companies even though we make more than our so-called superiors make in the office. The truck drivers are basically lied to, disrespected, and gaslighted on a daily basis. Then when you leave these companies they steal your last paycheck. I could go on and on, but I've been doing DoorDash and UberEats, and even though I make a heck of lot less money, I'm happy, and I have time to pursue other hobbies and interests. So the bottom line for me is that I'd rather make less money and be happy than making more money and being miserable.

Spot on video. You described it very well. It's hard to go from doing this, back to jumping back in a store doing retail or restaurant business. Love the freedom and flexibility. If I want to go home, I can go home, unlike a 9-5. VERY WELL EXPLAINED!

No way I would do gig work over my 9 to 5. I love my job.

I think it depends on the Market and the Job because I left a miserable Retail job 2 years ago to do gig work for the freedom. Unfortunately the amount of competition plus low tippers in my market makes me have to work 12-14 hour days 5-6 days a week regularly just to make a decent living. In the beginning it was great and I found a job that will give me more freedom and work life balance without someone breathing down my throat. I still have my own goals and businesses I am starting to one day replace my 9-5 so all in all I’m doing better now.

I worked as a cage supervisor at Seneca Niagara Casino in NF, NY. I hated hated hated hated working that job the last 2 years of the 5 I worked there. This was before pandemic though. I feel you I walked 15000 steps a night. Working overnights. I had a panic attack one night. At that point is was time to go. A friend got me into banking. Did that 5 years. Got tired of that runaround shit. Quit 3 years ago and never want to go back. Power to you Pedro. For me Instacart for the win. I love it.

I think the gig economy is a blessing for those dealing with social anxiety. I spent 25 years in a classroom. Although, it provided a steady outcome, I dealt with anxiety, depression, panic attacks, insomnia, vertigo, constipation (I said it!), and high blood pressure. I was on a TON of meds, receiving therapy, and getting weekly massages to ease the stress in my back. Today, taking NO meds or therapy. Haven't seen a masseuse in three years.

I never did a 9-5 but i worked in the restaurant industry for many years because of the money and ease of getting jobs so I could keep moving around the US, which is always what i loved doing. I got out ten years ago, its unbelievably poisonous that industry. I actually felt like i had some form of ptsd after leaving for a few years after. never again. I'm happy doing other things for less money to have my peace! I'm definitely starting to go all in working on my own business online so I can be my own boss and have complete control over my time and location. good luck to you with yours as well!

I totally agree, I was in retail management for years, trying to work my up the food chain. What we have to remember is that we only get one life, enjoy it and love your family and friends. All I can say is thank you, I needed this

My story is similar to yours, but i got into the gig economy long before covid. I need the freedom and flexibility this work offers. I'll never go back to a w2.

Covid was the eye opener for all of us in the restaurant industry. Coming back out of covid was pure hell between regulations and how we were treated by guests. People came out with a sense of entitlement that we had never experienced. The writing on the wall was when I was giving my all and my bosses were telling me I couldn't expect my coworkers to give the same effort yet they were making the same amount as me. What kept me around for 3 more years were my regulars. Even swam to work for our hurricane recovery after Ian for a popular southern restaurant chain if you can connect the dots. Gig work is no different than being in the middle of a Friday night rush. It can be frustrating but we always manage to adapt and push through.

Bruh fr w2's blow. Ever year I get a w2 and after a month or two i quit and go back to gig work. The pay is still lower than gig work. Yes its more consistent... but i hate coworkers.

I love the flexibility of gig work. My mom is hospitalized 250 miles way. I am with her now. Working when I can. We probably will leave this weekend and I will go back home area. I can work with the next upcoming appointments

i was a skycap before the pandemic that got furloughed like you and when set to return was told i had to take the jab so i decided to start doordashing instead. skycapping was a great job and i made tons of money doing it but, my health is first for me. i am also like you when it comes to having the freedom of setting my own hours and i have been doing this long enough now to know my market well enough to make the money i want when i want.
