We have a poke around the 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale, the hybrid-powered SUV that could save the Italian marque.

Read more at Auto Express:

The all-new Alfa Romeo Tonale has arrived. It's an Audi Q3-rivalling SUV that, in a first for the brand, will be available with plug-in hybrid power when it goes on sale in April - three years on from its concept debut. It carries over most of the show car's elegant styling, and Alfa has placed a big focus on the Tonale's interior quality, infotainment and connectivity, and promises strong performance from the plug-in hybrid version. But what's it like in the metal? Allow Nicola Hume to talk you through the Tonale's design, interior, engines and features in this first-look walkaround video.

The Alfa 75 was quite beautiful back in those days…

This car is not a Renegade, it’s a Compass! And the 166 and the 75 were and are beautiful

I really hope this does well so we can continue to see that beautiful Alfa design language here in the states. Very engaging presenter too, hope to see her on more launches, she's got a good energy.

The 166 is one of the most beautiful Salons ever built…

Stunning bodywork and the Tonale isn't bad either

That'll be my next car!
I heard that the 130BHP versions won't be released in the UK
Alfa have been making good cars for years and they're as reliable, or better than the German opposition

Hopefully they reinvigorate their sales force too! As a long time Alfa owner and avid Alfisti who still owns a 3 litre Spider I tried 3 times to buy a Giulia between November 2021 and January of this year from the local dealer. They couldn't once send me a quote or give me an idea of price or even make the slightest effort to sell me a car. I ended up buying a car from another brand who actually wanted my business. Both Volvo and Lexus made the kind of effort that one would expect from a luxury brand. Even the local Abarth dealer was more interested in selling me a car than the Alfa sales people. No matter how good the product is without proper service it'll be more of the same.

I really hope Alfa decides to put those headlights in the next gen Giulia. I would seriously consider trading mine in for that cleaner front end design

“I’m 5’6” and have got plenty of room”… great benchmark…

This presenter is great! Put her on more often.

I'm sorry but you are wrong: Tonale is based on Jeep Compass, not Jeep Renegade, even if they should be similar. Anyway, Alfa engineers worked hard to give to the Tonale a superior driving pleasure.

I always found the pre facelift 166 one of the prettiest sedans ever.

The 75 was my favorite when I was a kid.

Putting the shift paddles on the column rather than behind the wheel is a sign that they intended for them to actually be used.

My VW has them on the steering wheel which is nice until you’re turning in an intersection, about to grab second gear and realize the shift paddle isn’t where you expect it to be.

Replacing the top-selling Giulietta with a niche crossover hybrid weighing nearly 2 tonnes that's no quicker, no more economical and yet costs a lot more, seats the same number of people and has less cargo space?
Yeah, great work Stellantis. This is exactly what Alfa Romeo should be building to win back customers en masse. If their target market is lobotomites it will be a tremendous success.

Good review, and nice too see Nicola here, one of my most favourite car reviews on Auto Express is one hosted by Mat Watson, quite a few years ago.

Boring/pointless car, as any crossover. Will never understand why people buy these raised hatchbacks to always drive them on asphalt. A regular hatchback or a saloon/wagon makes a lot more sense, looks better, drives better and uses less fuel.

I like the presenter, but indirectly calling the Alfa 166 ugly is just....wrong. It's a beautiful car. Not among the most beautiful of Alfas but definitely a beautiful saloon.
