🤨 “Wait, WHAT? You want me to say sorry??? Doesn’t that go against everything you’ve ever taught me Erin??”

🤗 Yup! As someone who has successfully sent thousands of cold messages & receives hundreds of networking requests every week—I’ve found that humility gets the job done.

🤓 Now, if you’re networking with a peer—there’s no need for overt humility. But if you’re trying to connect with someone “higher up” — you have to give them a reason to spend their precious time reading your random message.

👉🏼 You might think phrases like “I apologize if…” or “Sorry for the random message” might sound “weak” or “people pleasing-y” — but in this context, they are very powerful for one reason: they disarm.

🤷🏼‍♀️ But at the end of the day, it’s up to you! Experiment with different templates. You can choose to omit any disarming language if you want to come across more direct/assertive. Go for it! I won’t stop you lol.

❔Where to network? LinkedIn! You can send a messsage to nearly anyone.

⭐️ TIP #1: KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE. Networking with a peer is entirely different than networking with a CEO. Networking with a peer can be more “I work in X, you work in Z, let’s trade info!” But networking with someone you have less to offer is tricky. You need to give them a reason to pay attention to your message when they’re probably recieving dozens or hundreds/day.

⭐️ TIP #2: FIND SOMETHING IN COMMON: A mutual similarity (alma mater, sorority/fraternity, sports team, hometown, colleague, former company, etc.) can INSTANTLY BOOST your chances of getting a response.

⭐️ TIP #3: DON’T ASK FOR ANYTHING: I know this goes against the template I just used lol but that’s a generic template. If you’re networking with someone in a position of power, don’t ask for a phone call or coffee meet up in the first message. That will be a HARD NO from them (unless you have a mutual connection). Just say “Nice to connect with you! compliment, compliment, flattery, complliment! have a good day!”

⭐️ TIP #4: OFFER VALUE. This is a biggie. If you can offer them value (a new insight, a tutorial, a connection) you’re golden. If you’re netowkring with a “higher up” — listen to a recent podcast they were interviewed on or reference there twitter (or threads lol). Figure out what they’re curently interested in & make yourself available to them.

⭐️ TIP #5: BE HUMBLE. In this scenario (when you have no leverage), you can easily come off arrogant or overconfident. A little bit of humility goes a longggg way.

I have SO MANY juicy networking tips (like how to find ANYONE’s email) and have a whoel section dedicated to it in my program—the Career Workshop Intensive. ✨ DM me “CAREER” if you want more info!

You got this! 👏👏👏

I love this advice! The only piece that sets off alarm bells for me as a receiver of this type of message is the "I'd be happy to help you out". This feels less like networking and more like you are trying to cold call (msg) someone to sell.

Ok, but what if the second I get on the call with them it's going to be the most painfully awkward experience of their lives and they'll regret it within the first 20 seconds? I'm in my 30s and can't even have a smooth phone conversation with my own family members. 😣 Neurodivergent problems...

One tip: Don't sent it all in one message, that looks like spam. Send in seperate messages as shown in the short.

Thanks for the script idea! Wouldn’t the “I’m sorry” part come across as people pleasing and weak (for lack of a better word) though? I ask because I’m seeing a lot more content about minimizing or rephrasing apologies in professional interactions to exude confidence. Sure, cold emailing can be uncomfortable, but it doesn’t seem like something anyone should be apologetic for. Much gratitude for your content! ❤

But what if I'm having fun being awkward? Can't I just be awkward if I want to?

Idk, I think it would be pretty awkward if you were dancing at your laptop like that at a networking event.
