From Wikipedia: According to the story:

It was a beautiful sunny day. Louisa M. Stead (1850-1917), her husband, and her daughter Lily, decided to go for a picnic. They went picnicking on Long Island Sound. While having their picnic, the Steads heard a scream from a young boy. Mr. Stead ran to the rescue while Mrs. Stead and young Lily watched helplessly as Mr. Stead and the boy drowned.

Their troubles were not over yet, however, and without her husband, Mrs. Stead became very poor and destitute. Yet God never left her. He provided for her always and she and her daughter made it through. Louisa learned to trust God, and thus the words to the song 'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus.' Shortly after this incident, Louisa and her daughter Lily moved to South Africa where they became missionaries.

The tune was composed by William Kirkpatrick (1838 - 1921)

Played on a Berlin reed organ, manufactured in Berlin, Ontario Canada in 1897.

Nice organ playing.

Nothing soothes my soul's pain like hymns played on a Church organ.

Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus
Just to take Him at His Word
Just to rest upon His promise
Just to know, "Thus saith the Lord"
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him
How I've proved Him o'er and o'er
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus
Oh, for grace to trust Him more
I'm so glad I learned to trust Him
Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend
And I know that He is with me
Will be with me to the end
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him
How I've proved Him o'er and o'er
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus
Oh, for grace to trust Him more
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him
How I've proved Him o'er and o'er
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus
Oh, for grace to trust Him more
Oh, for grace to trust Him more

Thks for sharing the story behind this hymn Professor Jantzi! I too have a tragic story, of loss, rejection and trusting in Jesus who never left me no matter how troubled and foolish I was in my youth.
My husband has battled Oral cancer starting in 1985 when he was 34 yrs old. We'd just moved to the Pacific Nwet, 1, 400 miles from our church family and friends...2 newly adopted older girls when our lives began tumbling down out of control, filled with sorrow and tears. The stress of everything (17 yrs of being raised dirt poor and a horrible, abusive home before I met and married) threw my health into a downward spiral...auto-immune, chronic pain and a lot of suffering. BUT, no matter how angry I was at Jesus, HE never let me go. Things only got worse and I only had HIM to turn to...an intestinal AVM (an aneurysm like mass) caused me severe anemia until was by total accident (ha!) found and fixed 2 yrs later and I'd received more than 50 transfusions...was a nightmare for me. I could only TRUST in JESUS as others just don't care like He does.
My husband has surpassed and amazed all of his doctors who don't understand how he's been able to outlive this cancers low, 5% survival rate...and be well enough to be Motorola's most sought after systems engineer, AND countinues working after retiring over 2 yrs ago as they desperately need him...he engineers 911 and ER radio systems for the Government and promises to retire 100% when the Seattle project is finalized. I can only trust in Jesus for His promises of eternal life...THAT is HOME, not here on earth....we'll soon be there, then we can all share our own stories of how the Lord lead us home as we all have a story of our life on planet earth. Tragic loss and suffering only leads us home by having Trust in Jesus...how sweet!
I wouldn't trade those promises for all the riches and good health this earth has to offer...whenever I see someone who has an easy life, almost charmed life but they don't know Him...
I say to myself.."Isn't Jesus wonderful...He's giving them their reward now as He loves them too and knows that THIS is all they'll receive!
But He's also given me the most beautiful 3 acres with phenomenal view and the house isn't too bad either! Still praying for the gift of music, may not be here on earth!

Thank you Rodney for playing this old hymn. It was written in 1882 so yes it's old. It brings a tear to my eye because we as a congregation sang it at my mother's funeral in 2006. In church yesterday we sang In the Garden and that one was sang at my dad's funeral in 1980. Get me a hankie, but that's ok. In Christ, Your WI friend.

Thank you Sir !

'Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to take Him at His word,
Just to rest upon His promise,
Just to know, "Thus saith the Lord."

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I've proved Him o'er and o'er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more!

O how sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to trust his cleansing blood,
Just in simple faith to plunge me
'Neath the healing, cleansing flood!

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I've proved Him o'er and o'er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more!

Yes, tis sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just from sin and self to cease,
Just from Jesus simply taking
Life and rest and joy and peace.

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I've proved Him o'er and o'er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more!

I'm so glad I learned to trust Thee,
Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend;
And I know that Thou art with me,
Wilt be with me to the end.

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I've proved Him o'er and o'er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more!

Wonderful, thank you. Reminds me a little of "Once in Royal David's City". Would love to hear you play that one!
