I posted this to my community page and IG but want to post here too.

I applied for the Sephora Squad!

I know it’s probably a long shot since I am a smaller channel and IG page but they say follower count doesn’t matter, a unique perspective and personality does.

The last 12 months or so has been a year of health issues, upheaval and change and this channel has been such a wonderful and needed experience and space.

The Sephora squad would be such an amazing opportunity to learn and grow even more! The application is based on testimonials so if you’ve enjoyed my content I’d really appreciate if y’all would fill one out for me ❤️

The application closes on 4/4

My big one is when they either struggle or openly are saying they aren’t sure about a product while “testing” but then when they wrap it up at the end it is totally positive. It makes me think, were you just the one testing that? What??

I related so hard to all of this, and the phrase “I just don’t trust your methods” had me dying 🤣 We can’t turn off our scientist brains! Which I think is a good thing 🤓

I want to say ... I LOVE how your brain works. I'm an analytical concrete linear thinker, and I function better when things make sense. And, a lot of things people say in reviews don't make sense. I did a similar video and mentioned/tagged you because something you said in your Brand Red Flags video really resonated with me. I'm glad you're here. We need your scientific perspective on things.

I’m loving these red flag videos. It helps me to stop when I come across them and really NOTICE it’s happening, especially with reviews.
I don’t like the “run don’t walk” thing either. Not everyone is looking for the same things in products. There are very few (if any) products that would work well for EVERYONE when we all have different skin undertones, textures, needs, and preferences. I like when people tell me *why* they like something so I can decide if it’s something for me.

I really, really like your analytical approach to reviews! It’s an extremely helpful breath of fresh air!

Added pressure to the consumer is SUCH a red flag from me too! We get it from marketing all the time anyway, I do not want it from creators I watch.

Really great points and I agree with them all - especially re: reviews that lack depth/details and mistaking personal preference for performance.
I especially dislike the beauty community's grudge against satins when people say a shade is 'very lack lustre'... that... that's the literal definition of a satin.

I have not watched a lot of red flag videos so I apologise if other people have already said these, but here are some of mine:

* 'who is this for?', 'strange undertone', 'it's straight up [insert colour]' - human beings and cultures are vastly diverse and it is sad to hear someone not being able to even imagine your skin type or tone or preferences in your culture. It is not difficult to describe things in neutral accurate language, without expressing shock/confusion/disgust.

* sneaky editing cuts - I have too often witnessed someone struggling to blend a product and then cut to it fully blended. Even if they say 'I fixed it off camera' I would like to know *how* they fixed it and *how long* it took.

* using poor technique with product they expect to dislike - I understand people can be rushed or have 'an off day''. However, sometimes I see them applying/blending with either less care than usual or with tools they do not usually use or brushes they have enough experience to know that will produce bad results.

* descriptive language that relays very little information - it does not matter if someone uses one hundred adjectives if all of them are e.g 'gorgeous', 'stunning', 'nice', 'beautiful' etc. Please tell us *why* you think product is all these things.

* monthly rankings for large volume of products that cannot possibly be effectively reviewed in that time frame. If someone buys 20+ eyeshadow palettes with 12 to 30 shades in them then how many shades is it likely they have used?

* buying wrong shade because it was only one in stock... then mostly talking about the poor shade match and giving a negative review on that basis.

* sweeping generalisations on makeup products/styles from an entire continent. Especially when reviewer has little or no experience of makeup from that area.

* no comparisons to other products - not a lack of swatch comparisons but when there is *zero* mention of any other brands. This strongly makes me suspicious of undisclosed sponsorships.

Just when I think I've seen everything I can think of covered in the makeup YouTube world, you will come up with yet another topic. A useful, practical topic, too! Thanks again, Colin. Keep up the good work. Your content spans creativity and analytics seamlessly. Very enjoyable and much appreciated.

A red flag for me is when somebody is talking about a product in a way that makes it seem like it’s the one and only of it’s kind. Obviously I want to find things that are unique, but there is a different type of unspoken urgency when somebody acts like a company has reinvented the wheel and I automatically don’t trust that.
“Run do not walk” is like nails on a chalkboard. OMG. 😂

My red flag: conveniently only using the three or four best shades of the palette in their tutorial. I’ve been burned by this so many times. There will be one amazingly metallic sparkly shade and the rest are chalky and suck. That just so happened to be left out of the “review.”

ok omg you made so many good points. i unfollowed a fairly large, beloved creator years ago because i could see them struggling with a palette but they refused to say one negative thing about their early access pr and i just.... i KNEW they could do better! they HAD done better before.

also, even the larger creators who maybe "don't like blue, but bought this blue palette to see how it performs. i have an issue with this, because often, makeup folks who don't like a color don't particularly use it a ton and i don't necessarily think they are super comfortable with that color and aren't even giving it a fair or thorough review or first impression, because they're already biased to not enjoy the color. idk. that's not always true but just something i consider.

I also wanted to say that I enjoy these videos, as I’m starting to review more products on my platform, and it’s helpful for me to know what people are looking for and/or leery of.

YES!! “Run don’t walk” or any hyperbolic phrasing like that is an immediate turn off for me. I will not be running OR walking thank you very much. I need at least 2 weeks to overanalyze, and then sit and ruminate on it before I bring something new into my collection 🤣

I really enjoyed this video that's about makeup but with a twist. I also enjoyed watching makeup brands I won't buy and why. both videos are thought provoking. thanks

Hallo Colin, great topic. My red flags are if angry or very negative attitude, project pan preachy and Amazon must haves.

I only have an associates degree and a marketing degree (associates in graphic design and the bachelors in marketing), so I don't have as much education as you do, but even in freshman year of college my teacher talked about "playing the believe it and doubt it game" as he called it to look for bias in articles. That's why I can always spot bias in the news and understand the bias that can be in beauty reviews.

One red flag for me is when I see a lot of videos from different creators with the same thumbnail like, "BEST SUMMER PALETTE OF 2022?!". It makes me feel like the brand might have given them talking points in exchange for PR or it might be an undisclosed sponsorship. I still follow some people who do what you discussed in this video, but some of those things were too much of a turn off for me in combination with other things from the creator that I eventually unsubscribed because I lost interest in their channels. I'm super picky about the beauty influencers I watch due to limited time. I rather watch something that could help me learn something new in my industry or political content. I unsubscribed from even well-loved creators from both the large and small beauty communities because I lost interest and moved on. LOL

Oh also thank you for mentioning me in the description box. 💓

I feel like I would be a bad reviewer because I would probably like most things, if I was able to test a ton of makeup😂 Not in "omg, it's so pretty, go buy it" kind of way but in a "it's fine and achieves the same look most other products could achieve" kind of way. But that's why I don't focus my content on reviews. That's also why I don't own a lot of makeup, because I have no need for something that looks the same on the face but has a slightly different formula, delivery system, or minute color difference.

I still consume a lot of beauty content and a decent amount of it is review-based. I agree with you on all of your points not because I actually consider buying products but because it makes the content more interesting. I love hearing people with very distinct preferences talk about why they like or don't like the product and how it compares to other things on the market.

Great video ❤!!! One of the things that I get bothered by is CONSTANTLY pushing affiliate links and codes. I completely support the links and understand that for many it’s their main source of income but there is a line that gets crossed for me and I can’t even explain why… it just goes from zero to 100. I am ok with it, until I am not 😩. If it’s mentioned or posted waaay too much, it rubs me the wrong way. 😢🤷‍♀️🙈
