@MsAdrianSnow @BenBatemanMedia @MAttRitter1 and @RadioTFB break down episode 9!

AFTERBUZZ TV -- The Americans edition, is a weekly "after show" for fans of FX's The Americans. In this episode, hosts Josh Richmond, Ben Bateman, Matt Ritter, and Adrian Snow break down the Episode 9 of Season 3. It's The American's Season 3 podcast!

The Americans is an American television period drama series created and produced by former CIA officer Joe Weisberg. The series premiered in the United States on January 30, 2013, on the cable network FX and completed its second season on May 21, 2014.

Set during the Cold War period in the 1980s, The Americans is the story of Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and Philip Jennings (Matthew Rhys), two Soviet KGB officers posing as an American married couple living in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. with their unsuspecting children (Holly Taylor and Keidrich Sellati) and their neighbor, Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich), an FBI counterintelligence agent.

The series focuses on the personal and professional lives of the Jenningses, sometimes incorporating real-life events into the narrative. The show's creator has described the series as being ultimately about a marriage.

On April 16, 2014, FX renewed the series for a third season consisting of 13 episodes, which premiered on January 28, 2015.

Lois Smith, the old lady in the mail robot office was amazing. I almost cried in that scene. It's one of the greatest moments in television in 2015. Keri Russell was perfect too. God.. What a scene to be watched over and over.

10/10 this show

That was great session for the team as a whole and all four members. Yes, an Emmy for the writing or Lois Smith would certainly be justified. Don't forget her in "Twister" as the woman with all the windmills, an important part of the movie.

sorry guys, I wasn't looking for an apology and yes I have the "advantage" of being old. I still had to lookup the name and I think that it is significant in the context of the story. It enriches one's reading of the story. Like your take (all of you) on the show but it could be interesting to have 1 person with a little knowledge of history to provide context. Afterbuzz is fun and probably not directed at me but there are several shows that could be improved with a little historical context in order to marry entertainment and history and make for a more interesting show.

I had a different interpretation on Elizabeth's decision to save Todd's life and decommission Hans. I think Elizabeth purposefully manipulated Hans into murdering Todd. By committing murder, Hans crosses a line and becomes even more entrenched in the spy world. You can't escape the fact he murdered for the cause (for Elizabeth, and isn't she the embodiment of the cause?) This is even more insurance for his loyalty. That scenario has the cold pragmatism we expect from Elizabeth. Additional evidence is found in Elizabeth's reaction to the Hans's confession. She acted surprised, but she didn't seem angry. More importantly, she didn't explicitly criticize his decision to kill Todd. Her silence speaks loudly here. I feel like this interpretation provides greater character continuity. What do you think?

Thanks for the in-depth insight every week!

Josh that Kimmy Hans thing could be a possibility. Hans is a dope though.

MsAdrianSnow didn't spell out her name in the past, and it's a good thing she started because Adrian can be spelled different ways (I had assumed it was the usual female version, Adrienne), but also it really sounds like she's saying "Miss" instead of "Ms.", even at the end after I had heard her spell it.

Ms. Snow is right: Oleg's dad is just a control freak.  But Oleg is up to something.  I did not really catch it when watching the episode; but after reflecting on it and reading other comments, I don't think what he is doing is necessarily what he is telling Stan he is doing.  I'm not exactly sure what he *is* trying to do, though.

Aderholt is a spy?  Huh, that doesn't scan for me.  A spy for whom?  He is not going to be the one to find the bug if he is spying for the KGB.  If they were trying to give him a win by doing that, which is dubious, they would have told Phillip to be aware that it was coming.

I predict that they will not have Phillip sleep with Kimmy.  If they were going to go that route, I think they would have made her 17 or at least 16.  I just think that's a bridge too far, even on FX.
