Triple DES (3DES) is a cryptographic algorithm that uses the Data Encryption Standard (DES) cipher algorithm to apply three layers of encryption to data. 3DES encrypts data three times, using three different keys, to provide a more secure encryption process than regular DES. 3DES is also known as Triple Data Encryption Algorithm (TDEA) and is an enhancement of the original DES algorithm, which was designed to replace DES due to its relatively weak key size of 56 bits. 3DES uses a key size of 168 bits, which is considered more secure than the original DES algorithm. 3DES is a widely used standard and is considered a legacy encryption algorithm, but it has been superseded by newer and more secure algorithms such as AES.
