XRD Sample Preparation - Back Loaded Sample Holder - X-ray Diffraction

In this video, I will show you how to prepare a back-loaded sample using tools from Malvern Panalytical. This method is typically preferred as it helps reduce preferred orientation if the sample particles are not spherical, it produces a relatively smooth surface (smooth for a powder), and the sample height is better controlled. This sample holder is great if you want to perform Rietveld refinements on your data.

Do you know how much powder is needed for the Analysis (in grams)?

Ok, and here we have best sample with a lot of preffered orientation. Any pressure on the back load the sample increase this effect :( ???

Hello sir. Thank you so much for this video. I have a quick question. I have sand (500micron) and clay(60micron) particle samples to run in XRD. I have been milling them in a ring &puck mill to try and get them at least below 45um / to a talcom powder consistency. I read that milling can cause damage to particles due to high heat so I have been adding Butanol to combat this (I read in papers). Also I read that particles can’t be below 1um, would this damage the sample result if they were ? As some of my clay sample had tiny amounts of particles below 1um, thank you :)

Hello, thank you for a video! I have a question. Is there a difference in results when I have a powder of fraction 100 micron and powder of fraction 200 micron? Or is there any specific requirements regarding to particle size of sample?

Thank you so much for the video 🧡 please i have a question ? Can we apply the XRD on cement powder ?? Like we just put cement without any adds ? Like how we can use the xrd in construction field ?? And thank you again

Hello👋 thanks for the video ❤ I have a question, what will happen if the powder is not properly filled in the sample holder? Does it make any difference on the XRD results?

Hi sir, if I just put an amount of powder that just exceeds a little and use straightforward the sample holder (to avoid pressing or rubbing too much the back surface of a powder sample), would it cause the upward sample displacement effect?

If we use glass side directly on a sample leads to any preffered orientation?

How would I go about analyzing larger, solid specimens? Like say a 4" long x 1" wide stainless steel specimen

Can I use a ring and pick mill for 10mins go grind my sample or will that cause phase transformation due to a lot of pressure ? Thanks
